You don't give alot of details so I'll try my best.If you're referring to weight training you should start with a relatively light weight for a given exercise doing multiple sets but not too many reps as this will use up too much energy before you start your real work.Don't put a fixed number of sets on this because some days you'll be more warm than others to start with.Warm up for a while until you start to move more freely and the warm ups feel comfortable. It doesn't hurt to break a sweat,it's actually a good idea.Move up slowly in weight until you're warm then stretch a little and begin your workout.A similar plan with more stretching at the end of the workout is good for a warm down.

Spend 10 or 15 minutes stretching, and take some time after you finish your workout to do some easy stretching. If you don't know any stretching exercises ask the person in charge at your fitness center or gym. You want to stretch out your calves, hamstrings for sure but there are some other stretches that help with the upper body as well.
I'm in my 50's and stretching plays an integral part in my fitness program, hope will become part of yours.

I have fallen TOTALLY in love with Power Yoga. I run from 5-15 Km/ day and still find it to be a great warm up/ cool down exercise. Gets the heart rate up and stretches everything.
Happy moving!

Depends on what your 'workout' is.
Basically you should mimic your workout movements in a reduced intensity, looking to utilise your full ROM (range of motion) at the body's joints. I don't mean stretching either, as stretching is not a warm up.
Anything that will increase the core temperature.
Bear in mind, it is harder to increase the body temperature in only shorts and singlet. Layer up and peel off as you get warmer.

Walking and stretching can prepare you for any more strenuous exercise. You want to make sure the the muscles are warmed up and limber and ready to be stressed. Don't forget to do more of the same to cool down.

The best I can think of at 4 in the morning is jumping jacks, or stand on one foot while keeping your arms out (dont bend the arms or legs if possible) then switch to the other side.
