I have read a little on this subject but can anyone explain more...

When my cat smells an odor (usually strong) she opens her mouth like this http://www.cat-olholics.com/images/flehmen.gif (picture) can anyone explain more on this?

i think with the mouth open they can detect more of what it is that they are trying to identify. their tastebuds sort of get in on the act.

He's opening his mouth so he can smell it more. My cat does that, too. They like to totally envelop the scent.
