The spelling is terrible, even though spell-check is available. The grammar is worse. The United States seems to have become a nation of semi-literate people. How did this happen?

The USA needs to reintroduce British grammar back into the English language. Now I get angry when the States talk about simplifying spelling. I believe educators are trying to decrease the education of the masses so they remain ignorant and can be controlled. Quite sad really.

Well, many of the askers are Ferners, sweets. Them folk frum fern kuntries jest cain't spell Anglash wert a dang, kan dey?
Others, actually, are just the product of current American education - lazy, in a hurry, and in many cases, of depressed intellectual capacity.
Still others are old farts who never quite got the hang of those new-fangled radio buttons, like "Check Spelling."
By the way, have you seen the discussions (serious, I presume) of plans to simplify the spelling in English? Looks like New York phonetics, to me. Personally, I believe the next generation should have to learn the wierdness of English spelling just as I had to (and I ask your pardon for ending the sentence with a preposition, but we are speaking informally and idiomatically, here).
I share your pain. I won't say I feel it, because Bill Clinton has not yet been reconstructed into a brilliant Elder Statesman. Wait for it.
Cheers.

Yesterday, I had about 2 hours, go round with a person, here.
I was correcting grammar for him. I asked if that was his homework.

He is an English teacher.

When he questioned me on a few points, I finally told him that I had 2 1/2 years of Latin, 12 years of English and grammar,
2 years of Italian, about a year of Spanish.

He knew nothing of hanging infinitives.
Teachers?
Does this answer your question?

Most people write the way they speak. Oral language has a
different flavor than the true ,proper Queen's English. You've
got slang that most people use,it doesn't go over well on the page. And when you write slang there aren't any punctuations.
(or should I say they 're mostly contractions). Reading slang is
worst than discerning hieroglyphics.
Sounding Hip & Being In The "In Crowd", has made Ebonics
popular.And thus,Minds are Mush.

Why do you assume all the authors are Americans? I usually assume alot of the writers have learned English as a second language.

This is a global forum, isn't it?

Some writers are also clearly children. Perhaps you are right though. American students do seem to score sub-par when their test scores are compared to students in other countries.

The supposed anonymity of sites such as these where you can pretend to be someone you're not has a lot to do with it. How many people do as I have done, offered a first and last name as my user name?

In the larger context, I feel the lack of formal communication has been lost in all except the most structured of communications (legal, etc). If you can answer with impunity what's the stick to ensure the appropriateness of your answer?

There are a lot of kids on here who don't care about learning and using proper grammar. There are also many people writing from countries outside the U.S., so their English is not well-formed sometimes.
