You need to keep the .jpg or .wmv or .doc otherwise the computer doesn't know what the file type is.

Windows identifies files by the 3 letters after the last dot (known as the extension). For example if a file is called file.txt, Windows will assume it is a text file and associate the files with notepad (thus the notepad icon will appear beside the filename). If you take that file and rename it to file.wmv, then Windows will assume it is a multimedia file and place the Windows Media icon next to it.
When you double click on the file then Windows will actually look into the file to determine what the file is. They say the file might become unusable because in the process of looking into the file to see what it is, there is a possibility that the file could become corrupt and therefore unusable.
The only way to stop this happening is to ensure that the extension is correct for the type of file. To ensure this, set Windows Explorer to not hide common file extensions (Tools->Options).
Hope this helps.

What you're doing is also changing the file extension, such as .jpg .bmp .exe, etc.
Say, if you have a file named " Benny.JPG " and you click rename, what you probably did is delete everything and just renamed it to " Bonny " with no ".JPG" on the end. The computer will then not recognise the file type and therefore becomes "unusable".
to fix the problem, just re-attach the file correct file extension to the end.

You can change the main name, just don't change what comes after the period. You can change the name from bob.doc to mary.doc, just don't change the .doc, or the computer will not know that it is a document file, and will be unable to open it in any program.
