First off, some dogs don't like this at all and will try to bite, even dogs that are otherwise perfectly nice, so you may need to get a muzzle.

First you'll need to get special nail clippers for dogs. They come in two styles, one kind looks more like curved scissors and the other has a hole that the dogs nail goes in and then a blade goes up and cuts it. The first style is more common and a little easier to use. You can find these at WallMart, PetsMart, Target, basically anywhere with pet supplies. Do NOT use human nail clippers as this can split the nail.

To cut the dogs nails lift the paw and using the clippers cut just the tip off of the nail, being carefull not to cut the quick (the red vein that runs through the dogs nail). If you can't see the quick because your dog has dark nails, then you can take a flashlight and put it under the dogs nail. However, if you just cut off the tip you should be fine.

A dog WILL NOT bleed to death from getting a nail cut too short.
Have an old bar of soap on hand when cutting nails. If you happen to hit the quick, or vein, rub the bar on the end of the nail to stop the bleeding, The more often you cut a nail the shorter the vein gets. I hate black nails, black skin, black hair dogs to trim nails.
Depending on the dog, you probably will have to get the proper sized Nail clipper for your dog.
Do not forget the dew claw.

If you don't keep the nails clipped, they will cause problems with the way the dog walks, and they will catch them on more things like rugs and have a tendency to tear or break the nail causing more problems.

A hand held rotary tool works good also.

I been a dog breeder of labs for 12 years to cut the dogs claws you need a special type of nail clippers and look at it's claw look for the vein if u can if you cut that vein your gonna hurt the dog so don't cut to far or your dog could bleed to death..

you can buy clippers - make sure you do not cut lower than the red part of the claw - if you do your dogs foot will bleed - ALOT! Chances are they he or she will not forgive you in a hurry either.

Best to take them to a vet - usually they will clip them for nothing as part of a check up

you can buy clippers but you would be better getting them done by a vet or one of them dog places as they have nerve ends in the nails and if you cut into them you can cause the animal a lot of pain

Can't believe a dog breeder thinks a dog will bleed to death if a dogs quick is cut!!!! never heard such rubbish.
If you haven't done or seen this done please take your dog to the vets or an experienced groomer especially if the dog has black nails.

Either take them to a vet to do it or you can get small clippers for this purpose. Just make sure you don't clip too close to the quick otherwise they'll bleed.

Cut a little at a time. If you accidently cut its quick, it could bleed. If that happens, put sceptic powder to stop the bleeding.

Naw, wont bleed to death as some1 has claimed. Tats nonsense.
