i have an plot of land that needs a structural design to build a kitchen. it is roughly 70 foot long and one side is 40foot long and the other is 30 foot. it is in the shape of a trapesium. the land sits next to a railway track. i wanted to put a concrete slab rather than piling then use RSJ to build on top. this is so we can have a light building built. The plot of land is part of a community centre which requires a kitchen to be built on a very tight budget. Can sombody help please?

Go talk to Lisa, Martin, and Karen at Polygamy Now. They live in an "intentional community" with regular community meals. They should have some good input for you.

First of all: what help do you want exactly? If it's where do you start in getting someone to do it: find an architect. They normally co-ordinate projects these days.

Your idea sounds feasible (although these days you don't have rolled steel joists (RSJs) but universal sections). You'll probably only need pad foundations if you want a steel structure. A pad foundation is basically a small concrete slab under each column. You'll only need a full concrete slab if the ground is really poor.

If you're looking for a cheaper building it would probably be an idea to build in reinforced concrete rather than steel, as it generally ends up cheaper. But the architect will take you through all of that anyway.

Your description of the plot is unclear. You will need to satisfy building regulations requirements. I don't know these. You should contact your local authority. They can provide a lot of free advice and help. The sooner you get them involved the smoother your project will go.

There are free CAD programs on the Internet.
One is a three dimensional program, which can be used for building design, FREE!

Type in Free CAD software, and I think you'll find it.

Another is a machine shop CAD, but can be used for design and 3D rendering. FREE!
