I lie in the midwest U.S. and have never heard that phrase. In what part of the world did you hear that?

In Spanish, a city block is often referred to as a "manzana", a word which also means "apple".

I wonder if there is some relation?

is it a regional thing? i've lived in the south & the west and never heard anyone call them that.
