Having Icons is always useful as a double check before using the bin but I am loathe to to use it until absolutely sure what I am deleting.

if its the desktop ones u can go to display options and hit the customise button under desktop menu, or u can go to the program and copy the exe file (theone with the icon, its an application) and paste it on the desktop and move to where ever

When you open the Recycle bin, there is an icon at the RH end of the toolbar that will display 'View' when you point to it. Click the down arrow on this. I prefer Tiles, but you can choose as you wish.

i assume you don't know what you are deleting when you empty your bin
right click
choose explore you can then see the contents of your bin
right cick and select properties
there you have a few options to alter how things are deleted
one option is to delete with out going to the bin
another is how much of the drive to use as the bin

check to see what your limit is set at for your recycle bin, size wise. It could be set very low and all of the files are just too big.

and if all else fails, there are lotsa free undelete/software recovery programs available.
