VERY much so! I've heard of lame comments quoted from the press like 'We may not open doors for people, but we mind our own business.' Oh please!?
To be fair to our fellow Singaporeans, we were unjustly ranked pathetically low in a recent courtesy survey because we used a really pathetic method of gauging courtesy. We aren't necessarily ruder than other nations simply because we don't open doors or express gratitude. Asians tend to be more 'stoical' when expressing any form of positive emotions, and Singaporeans are no exceptions to this rule.
But the most perculiar thing about Singaporeans is, while they are relatively more reserved in expressing joy, happiness and appreciation in the presence of strangers, they NEVER hesitate to jeer, boo or mock people around them. What's wrong with these people? Please don't attribute this bullshit behaviour to stress and societal pressure. We should honestly re-examine our attitude towards people around us.
Quit that fake cough, that 'quick-to-condemn' look or that 'I-m better-than-you' sneer and take a look at yourselves in the mirror before you 'spit venom' in any stranger's face.
As so aptly depicted by Jack Neo in his recent movie 'I Not Stupid 2', a down-trodden middle aged man 'coughs' unnecessarily whenever he thinks people are show-offs. Truth to tell, he's using pathetic means of overcoming his own inadequacies. I salute Neo for showing us, from his movie, how stupid and rude we Singaporeans truly look.

I haven't been there since the late 80s, but I found the people both courteous and friendly.

I guess so. People are minding their own businesses that they care less about others.
Not a Singaporean.
