I've been plagued with mouth ulcers or canker sores periodically for my entire life. I'm not sure where they come from (one theory is a mild peanut allergy) or how to get rid of them once they pop up (And good luck talking to a doctor or dentist about this - I have discovered neither know hardly anything about what causes mouth ulcers, how to get rid of them or how to avoid them. Some will mistakenly tell you they are caused by a virus like cold sores but this is not true; no one really knows what causes them but they are not contagious.)

Whilst I haven't found any surefire way to get rid of them, I have discovered a good way to help treat and, most importantly, prevent them.

Since living in the UK for the past two years, I have been drinking LOTS and LOTS of tea. Yep, just plain ol' black tea, hot or cold (although here I most usually drink it hot). Over these past two years, I have seen the frequency of my mouth ulcers disappear to practically zero whereas before I would break out once every couple weeks and sometimes the sore would last as long as a month!! This is actually a fairly well known home remedy, as tea has tannic acid in it which is thought to help reduce mouth ulcers. But before I lived in the UK, I drank tea occasionally (iced tea once or twice a week) and would try to soak a sore with a teabag when I broke out. I honestly don't think this low quantity and last-ditch effort had much effect. However, now I drink and average of 2 cups a day and my breakouts are far less often and less severe. In addition to drinking lots of tea, I have to admit I am also better rested living here as my work demands have not been as strenous - this may also have played a role in preventing my breakouts.

But if you already have an ulcer, there are some measures you can take to help them heal more effectively. Obviously if you have a quite sore ulcer, avoid anything hot (tea included - wait for it to cool) and anything acidic. That means no coffee, no OJ and no wine, at least until it has healed a little bit.

The topical ointments others have mentioned can also be helpful for numbing the pain, but be careful....some work by forming a protective 'film' to cover the sore but do this by burning like a *&$*% when applied. Although it numbs the area to make eating easier for the next 20 minutes, I think it actually irritates the sore and makes it take much longer to heal. So my advice is make sure you pick out one that is more mild. If you are really desperate to find something good & are willing to do some internet searching to order online, there is a German brand of mouth ulcer treatment gel my boyfriend bought for me that is great; it numbs without the burning pain of others. However, I can't think of the name off the top of my head.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Do all these

- Take Folic acid 400 mg 2 tables daily
- Use a pain releiving mouth gel
- Salt/Soluble aspirin gargles
- Brush your teeth well

Do these till the ulcers disappear, they'll work faster in combination.
