Why does he do it and where did he come up with this idea? Is it to distract the opponent? I've read through some his Jeet Kune Do stuff but couldn't find an explanation of what the scream is supposed to be OR do.

I believe it is a form of intimidation or something. When he shouts and act animalistic, he tries to scare the living daylights of his opponents. He needs to catch them off guard so that he can hurt them where it hurts the most. :)

Japanese women train their voices to have a high pitch. It is cultural. Loud women with lower voices are considered very un-feminine. The captains of industry may be speaking in a loud, aggressive, booming voice, then when the secretary comes in, everyone has to be very quiet so that they can even hear what she is saying. The elevator operators in the finest department stores are chosen by their high-pitched melodic voices, and it is a thing of beauty to hear them announce the floors and all the items on each floor.

That's his Kiai (spirit yell)
martial arts generally teach that, often in karate, tae kwon do, and judo to name a few. it's used to exhale while striking to get more power out of it by expulsion of air and tensing the muscles. you have to do it from your diaphagm, not the upper body. the kiai also comes in handy when you're the one getting hit, it'll help you take the pain a little better.
it can also be used as an intimidaiton tactic as well. I would do the same thing if i were to fight, who cares if people around will think you sound goofy! if it's effective, use it! Like Bruce Lee said "Keep what is useful, discard the rest."

Well they say that screaming gives a boost in your strenght it is like a trigger for the for the adrenalin to rush in your system giving you extra strenght and pain killers, if you notice most contact sports use this screaming method but not like Bruce Lee

There was a study showing that screaming or yelling while you kick or punch actually makes it about 30 to 40 percent more stronger and powerful. Yelling wasn't meant for show.

The kiap or yell in Korean lingo has three purposes, and I'd say it relates to all martial arts.
1) scare the opponent
2) tighten up your abdominal muscles, protecting the organs
3) release adrenalin

it releases air out of your diaphram at a fast rate. IT helps exualise the speed your moving at, in movies he did it jsut because but in real life he allowed shor bursts of loudness to allow the equalization of 500 pound + move such as a punch taht would hurt severly.
