My budgies love fruit, veggies, egg food with insects (also called insectivore food, made for exotic finches and softbills. I buy the brand 'Orlux'), and parakeet sized pellets made by Zupreem. Sometimes they'll snatch one of my Japanese quail's crickets, but for the most part they ignore them.

At the bare minimum, budgies should have some shredded carrot, slices of apple, grapes and green beans. The only veggie I'd steer clear of are avocados, as they're toxic to birds.

If your bird's never had these foods before, I'd sit down and teach them what they are and that they can be eaten. Most birds will accept you pretending to eat, while others (like my baby cockatiels and conures) need me to actually put the food in my mouth and chew >.< ! This training can take as little as 1 day and as long as a year. It really depends on your bird. Don't give up, though. Bird can be stubborn, but they're smart. If your guy doesn't like a slice of carrot, shave it and wind it between the bars of the cage. You could also pot it on a kabob and hang it from the top of the cage. Just don't suddenly put the new food in the cage and remove their seed. The bird will literally starve to death because they don't recognize the food. When you eat the food, make a huge deal out of it. Birds love people who get up and dance about the silliest things.

I'm sorry if this is a repeat of anything you already know. Good luck with your little guy :) .

other than bird seed and the fruits and vegetables mentioned by the others i also give my budgies the following :-
coriander sprigs, spinach, any other green leafy veggie.
grass believe me they love it.
roasted gram and peanuts.
sesame seeds, mustard seeds.
cuttle fish for their calcium.
egg shells when cuttle fish is not available.
whole wheat bread they love this too.
once i tried feeding them some processed cheese that had fallen off the counter i found they ate that too.
