For example a satellite phone is not a cell phone, but could be called a mobile phone.

A cellphone is used in a geographical area that has been divided into cells (areas served by different antennas). The system can detect when a caller (in a car?) has entered a new cell and will automatically transfer the call to the new antenna (to obtain maximum signal). A mobile phone is one that can be carried about (in a house?) or longer range within a town because it is wireless. Mobile phones may be served by only one antenna (or possibly more antennas using repeaters that transfer the signal when out of normal range). A cellphone also allows mobility and can be called mobile but not all mobile phones use a cell system. "I can hear you now!"

As one correspondent has already said, it's trerminology.

The Americans generally (and correctly) call them cell 'phones.

The Brits call them "mobile" 'phones.

A cell 'phone is basically a walkie talkie, it's a radio transmitter/receiver.

A radio system installed in an office or building is, in the "trade", called a base station.
A radio system installed in a land, sea or air vehicle is called a mobile station.
A radio system carried, either by hand or in a harness, by a person is called a portable station.

The "mobile" label is due to the (typically) ignorant lay press and other media mouths-on-sticks getting things wrong. Again.
