Most hunting and running dogs have dew claws.. it does touch the growd and aids in traction..for more speed, especially in rough terrain.
Great Pyrenees have double dew claws on the hind legs..Can't be shown without them..G.P's use them to help de-gut their enemy!

I saw the pictures in National Geographic..of Great Pyrenees killing coyotes..yep, they grab them by the throat, and claw their innards out with the hind feet...

The majority of dogs have them, though some are born without them, and some are born with extras. Some breeds, such as whippets, greyhounds and I think Italian greyhounds, are expected to have their dew claws removed for show purposes. Some breeders like them removed because they feel dew claws are an accident waiting to happen. They can get caught on things and get torn off.

Hope that helps :)

IT DOESN'T MATTER THE BREED...MOST DOGS ARE BORN WITH FRONT DEW CLAW AND SOME DOGS WILL HAVE DEW CLAWS ON FRONT AND BACK...THATS WHY WE TAKE OUR PUPPIES TO THE VET...YOU HAVE UP TO 3 DAYS AFTER THEY ARE BORN TO GET THEM CUT OUT...AFTER THAT IT WILL COST YOU OVER A $100.00...WHY!!! THEY HAVE TO PUT THEM UNDER SO THEY WON'T FEEL ANY PAIN...

Most dogs have them. It is not a matter of why. It is just a leftover toe that did not grow with the leg evolutionary speaking. Though some say it helps them gain traction when running.

I am pretty sure all if not most dogs have them. I am not sure why, but they do scratch there eyes with them. Keep they eyes clean so they have nothing to scratch and keep the nail clipped. My little pug hates me to do both but scatches his tender little buggy fly eye if I do not. I have to take care of my little man.

All dogs are born with it. Most of the time they are cut off when the dogs are puppies.
