Some of my favourite dishes were:

crepes (served with canned fruit, jam or fruit compote, prepared with just-picked blueberries in the batter, or rolled-up with "fresh cheese" and raisins)
creamed spinach, mashed potatoes and hard-boiled eggs
Wiener Schnitzel, rice & vegetables
cabbage rolls
leftover boiled potatoes were often cut up and fried with onions and served with hot dogs and salad
cream of wheat with a spoon of jam or Nestle Quik powder
blood sausage, potatoes and sauerkraut
liver, onions (LOTS) and mashed potatoes
polenta with canned fruit (I cannot imagine eating it with tomato sauce or gravy as many do)
meat loaf
hamburgers (not on a bun, but served with potatoes, vegetable & salad)
homemade vegetable soup (made with garden fresh veggies)
paprika chicken with rice and pickles
rotini noodles with hash (leftover cooked beef was ground up with onions, kielbossa or polish sausage, etc. and fried. This was then mixed with the cooked rotini and served with a salad.)
hash-filled dumplings (potato dough) with sauerkraut
plum dumplings with more canned fruit
tuna casserole (this developed when I was in my teens)
German style wieners (with natural casing) and dark rye bread

As you can see, my mother cooked what SHE knew and I love it to this day. I don't think I had frozen pizza until I was in my teens and I still don't like it. (I did like Ristorante's Spinach Pizza until they added the tomatoes, now I won't touch it.)

I think growing up this way has given me an appreciation for international foods. When I travel, I prefer to eat as the locals do and stay away from fast food chains. I've discovered some really WONDERFUL dishes this way. I figure that if I can eat it at any restaurant back home, why should I eat it while travelling overseas.

Scrambled eggs w/ green onions & deviled ham mixed in, made into 3-4 inch patties served w/ white rice drizzeled w/ shoyu on top. Also Liver & Bacon & onions w/ Ketchup on top. I like liver till today, but I never ate it raw. B4 Hamburger Helper ever was invented, My Mom made Hamburger helper from scratch w/ vegies from the garden, we had lettuce, green onions, asparagus, eggplant, tomatoes string beans,& some other stuff I can't remember, all in a 10 ft. X 10 ft. garden, nothing like fresh vegies. This was in the '60's. I'm 45 now & i grow vegies in back of my apt. on the 1st floor.

spaghetti, tacos, mac 'n cheese, hamburgers, soup, chicken, casseroles, veggies with every meal, sometimes breakfast for dinner like pancakes or scrambled eggs, pizza once in awhile, not too many hot dogs. we had a variety of foods in our house so it's hard to narrow it down to a typical meal. i always made sure to do the same (variety i mean) for my own children but tried to have healthier food than most of what my mother prepared.

We grew up relatively poor, and rarely had the money to go out to eat. Going to McDonald's once a month was a HUGE treat. We had things like meat loaf, pot roast, all kinds of chicken (roasted, fried, grilled, pot pie), swiss steak, hamburgers, spaghetti and meat sauce, mashed potatoes, pasta, lots of fresh vegetables (we had a garden)...just basic, every day food.

my mom is filipino, but she is a great cook and made all kinds of dishes for our family. a typical american dinner for us would be fried chicken, corn or some kind of vegetable, rice with gravy, dinner rolls and banana pudding for dessert.

Well we NEVER had frozen pizza and rarely hotdogs.
Mostly it was stuff like Pot Roasts and Chicken, stuff like that. Real food and we never got to go out.
