The most plausible scenario for the creation of the universe is that it was created ~15 billion years ago by the 'Big Bang.' With reasonable certainty we know what the universe was like for the first fractions of a second of it's life (When it was the size of a grapefruit, and full of quarks and anti-quarks)
As for the creation of our solar system, the most plausible explanation is that ~7 billion years ago a super-giant star had a supernova, ~6 billion years ago the stellar debris from the supernova coalesced into a nebula. ~5 billion years ago the center of the nebula coalesced to from our sun who's gravity ~4.5 billion years ago caused the remaining debris to coalesce into the nine planets
Earth's only special quality is it's moon which was forged from a planetary collision ~4 billion years ago.
Life started out ~3 billion years ago courtesy of the right combination of tidal forces, water, carbon, amino acids, sugars, oxygen, heat, lightening, etc. The result was simple anaerobic prokaryote bacteria.
Some time later aerobic bacteria formed, millions of years later anaerobic and aerobic bacteria form a symbiotic relationship creating the first eukaryote cell.
~1 billion years ago evolution kicks into high gear with protozoa (ie. Ameoba) mcroscopic multicellular life soon forms (a couple hundred million years, give or take)
It'd take too long to explain the rest so I recommend watching the Discovery Channel specials...
"Before The Dinosaurs"
"Walking With Dinosaurs"
"Walking With Pre-Historic Beats"
They are available on DVD if you can't wait for them to pop up on Discovery's next programing rotation.
Failing that I highly recommend the books at your local library.
Why is the above more Plausible?
Because physical evidence supports it. We have the bones, fossilized poop, rocks, microscopes, telescopes, etc.
What about Deities?
People can believe in their existence and worship them however they choose, however the religious texts which many hold stock in were written by man, most if not all beliefs hold that man is not perfect, and this carries over into man's creations.
I mean no insult however all religious texts are flawed, subjective opinions, mistranslations, contradictions, and deceptive scribes adding their own stuff centuries after the fact plague all religious texts in one way or another.
People can hold any belief they wish, but they should never be swayed to believe in a certain religious mindset. No one can tell you what to believe or how to believe in it, however belief is not everything. physical evidence is irrefutable but it doesn't rule everything out.
In conclusion Genesis and similar stories are incorrect (works of early man who did not understand his surroundings and lacked the tools to explore) However this does not threaten a deity...
What Started the Big Bang?
We don't know, maybe it was a Deity?

I'd rather have faith in God and believe that He created everything seen and unseen instead of having faith in scientists that are merely humans that can error. Having faith in God and being a good person and doing good things can get me into Heaven (if God truly exists). Having faith in humans and being a good person and good things won't get me anywhere (if God truly exists).
I use to ask my Catholic grandmother why she believed and she said that she'd rather believe just incase. I figure that if God does not exist then we will just be bones in dirt forever. If God exists then I definitely want to go to Heaven and meet Him and live there forever in peace and happiness. I definitely don't want to meet Satan. I've seen him on earth enough as it is.
Good luck in your search for the Truth.
P.S. I personally believe that if some type of evolution exists that God makes it exist. He has the power to change ("evolve") things.

Our first parents lacked faith and fell from grace.
If they hadn't lacked faith, you wouldn't have to be asking a question like this right now.
God has been trying to get us to understand the importance of faith ever since.
Pray to God for some.
It works.

Where are these transitional fossils you speak of?
If what you say is true then the earth should be littered with them.
