I Think it is to scare criminals, then they might think twice before they murder anyone,
Also, then they are one mouth less for tax payers to feed,

The Death Penalty is as much for the survivers of the crime as a punishment against the offender.
First of all, capital punishment is not necessarily the appropriate sentence for every murder.
But it should always be an option for the judges and juries.
The reasons are twofold.
Firstly, any would be perpetrator has to be made to understand that murder, torture, terrorism and crimes against the innocent are absolutely wrong and carry the weight of society's ultimates sanction.
Any society has the right to impose certain fundamental rules that can not be broken with penalty.
Secondly, the family of a victim needs closure and a sense of finality, if not complete justice. Because if the family and friends of the victim feel that there is no justice then they all lose faith in the law and with the loss of respect, the law is diminished.
This results in a diminishment of civility and order.
Capital punishment is not about making the offender suffer, despite the family of the victims wishing it so. If we as a society imprison or execute criminals with a dark and shameful glee then we risk losing the empathy we should feel for all people.

Then don't come to Texas because we hand out the Death Penalty like Halloween candy. It is meant as a deterrent, but with all those bleeding hearts the prisoner ends up serving life at a rate of about $23,000 a year per inmate.

Interesting question. Ask it to the ones who gave the death penalty to their innocent victims.
Let's see...what about the guy in Indiana? You know, the one who bludgeoned that little girl's mom and big brother to death? What was the point of that? Oh yeah, he needed someone to rape. So, he took the girl and her little bro. And killed the boy. What was the point? Oh yeah, he was finished with the boy.
How about the two boys who, in a small town in Texas, dragged an old gentleman behind their pickup truck at top speed...the old gentleman experienced a long, painful, brutal death as his body was slowly torn apart over several miles.
What was the point of that? Oh yeah. The boys were in need of fun that night.
These criminals get off EASY, compared to their victims. Criminals who receive the death penalty go out in a quiet room, laying down, injected by a sterile needle.
WHat's the point of the death penalty? Making sure these monsters NEVER return to society.

The death penalty serves as punishment. While it may have been originally designed to deter crime, that was not the primary function and still isn't.
While I can see the reasoning behind your point of view for suffering, I don't agree with it. Most of those convicted and sentenced to death truly wouldn't care or "suffer". They would continue to exist just fine.
The pros and cons of the death penalty are always up for debate....as it should be. I don't think its a sentence that should be taken lightly, nor passed down lightly.

if the person thinks, he will straight be executed, he will think many a times before actually committing the crime. But, if he has the assurance to live on "in jail laboring for a very long time", he doesnt give it a second thought then, 'coz 1) he can appeal for plea, 2) has contacts outside who will try to bail him out, 3) and if all fails, atleast he will look forward to when he gets out as a free man, and be rewarded for the crime he committed and the sentence he went through.

So the violent person won't get out of jail or break out of jail and do the same violent acts. This has happened many times.

Ever hear of people that could get of jail? Yah, that would be awful. Plus they'll suffer even more on the other side.

True but in jail he is taken better care of the our children. He gets free medical free dental free food and shelter, and his victims family pays for him to live this way (as to we) by their taxes while his victim(s) will never know another day.
