unfortunately a lot of the bull breed of dogs are bought by irresponsible owners who think that they look "cool and hard" with one of these dogs.
The pitbull has been bred for a specific reason but with a responsible owner there is no reason why the dog would react in an agressive manner.
It is unfair that these dogs are put down because of the owners.
All dogs should be judged on behaviour not on breed.

Personally speaking, I think that the media has done a total disservice to pit bulls and also people who were breeding pit bulls for fighting, aggression. I have come across many a pit bull who when bred properly, for temperament, they are just as sweet as can be. Yes they are a one dog family. They are very loyal. They have tremendous strength in their bone structure. However when worked with, in obedience training, you can have a great dog! I think pit bulls, like Rottweilers, Dobermans, all have gotten a bad rap and it quite frankly isn't fair. Its truly not the dog's fault, its how they were bred, and raised. Of course in the media too, all that is published is about the attacks, etc and never about what good a pit bull did for a family and all. I think they're a misunderstood breed and an awesome dog!!!

They are bred as acessories - to make their owners look hard. And they can be encouraged to be "hard", too. They wouldn't be bred without that purpose. I hate the fact that their owners all seem to live in flats and the poor dogs are left all day long. I think dogs are companions and before you buy them, you should pass a test!
People take on pets as fashions without realising the full enormity. I had a German Shepherd, with bad hip dysplasia. The poor thing was overbred, too. Never ever buy a fashionable dog. The breeders are driven by money and breed for the public, not the good of the dog. There are too many Pitt bull terriers and as you can see, they are abandoned. Bring on licenses for dogs!

In my view, quite often it is the owner who completes the vision of menace with this breed. They seem to appeal to the tattooed knuckle brigade, and when teamed up with such and decked out with studded collars etc give the impression of danger, attack and violence which I know is not deserved. OK this dog has an enormous bite strength, but as a family pet they are really soft and placid.
It is the irresponsible breeding of dogs with poor temperament and poor handling which has labelled all of the dogs as an unacceptable danger. Sadly you can't tell a good'un from a bad'un just by looking at it briefly. So I can understand why the reaction to them etc has happened, but it is clearly not the breed's fault.

Pit bulls are not mis-understood. They were bread to be killer dogs for fighting and that is why they are the way they are. The only way one will ever get rid of that killer instinct in them is to breed it out and that would take generations up on generations, if it could be breed out at all. And then would they be pit bulls or something else.
Perhaps the person who owns a pit, and it kills or attacks should be put down instead?
they are ugly to boot.

i do not believe all pitbulls are bad. I also think that the reason there has been so many pitbull attacks this summer is because of the heat. They get grumpy just like we do but they take their aggression toward the heat out in the only way they seem to know as they know no differant.
There are bad pits yes, but there are bad shephards, chows, rotts, mastiffs, labs, and ankle biters. ALL DOGS CAN ATTACK, but the pit is the one getting the most publicity and so many are scared of just the name.\
HUMANS are who made these dogs bad by inner breeding and breeding to be fighting dogs. It is not the dog, it is the way some have been treated and trained, and bred to do.

Would would think that would not be true seeing NLV as a large dog fighting problem. There is a yahoo group that is for pit owners to post the good news about the breed

I think the problem with dogs of that type - ie bred for fighting - is that the fighting is inherent and it takes a special sort of person to own and care for them properly. Too many yobs take dogs such as Pits, Staffs, English Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, GSDs and Akitas and say - look at me - I've got a macho dog - I'm hard....
It's the owners that need sorting out, not the dogs.

One has long previous to a veteran as a scientific care dogs for his PTSD. absolutely everyone questioning of having a pit would desire to comprehend they are very energetic and want to artwork. the only she is fostering now desires an excellent backyard and somebody to play with to burn ability. My daughter even makes use of the huge tunnel toys with peanut butter for him to artwork at getting his take care of. they have all been clever and the super ones do no longer comprehend their power while taking part in, so be conscious till now getting one.

Yes I agree with you that Pit Bulls can be sweet and have a very good nature. As an animal lover I never like to see a dog having to be put to sleep.
However it is irresponsible owners who let these dogs run riot. And I have to say since I was bit by another dangerous dog, the German Shepard, whom I tried to save from having to be put down, returned the favour and bit me again.
Therefore they should be put down but only as a last resort.
The owners should be fined or sent to prison, when their dogs re-offend.
