There are many good self-help art instruction books in the library. For self-help in learning how to do precise, realistic and beautiful drawings of people and objects-- and other excellent content-- I recommend a book titled "How To Think Like Leonardo". It includes a section on learning to draw, and this is a good point of departure. Other texts might be more complete, but sometimes a simple presentation of basic principles is easier. A night course or paid lessons by an artist is better than self-help. I mentioned self-teaching first because it is an easy way to start. For painting, starting with paint-by-numbers, progressing perhaps to a tole painting class or a regular art class, might be an approach. Remember: If the mind retains its artistic vision and determination, the most awkward artistic hand by practice can slowly achieve competence then near-perfection.

Wow, if you could learn to paint and draw from a website I would be out of a job. You may want to take a class at a community college or university. Read some books, look at art and try some basic techniques. As for getting any good talent is key. Any grandmother can paint flowers.

Best I can suggest is get yourself a sketchpad, some pencils, pastels, water colours and give it a go. I wouldn't try anything too ambitious at first. Try some small sketches, have a play with different medium, subject matter. See what you feel comfortable with and what your style is like. Then progress to acrylics and oils if you want. I always used to carry a small notebook and pencil with me, so if I was out and I saw something I felt inspired by I could sketch. Art is one of those things that the more you do the better it is.

If you really feel some help, then why not see if there are any classes near you? Good luck and have fun.

where are you from? there are teachers nearly everywhere, there are art supply stores with how to books, if you are in the states. Hobby Lobby and Michaels arts and crafts both have supplies and classes.and there are many smaller art supply stores all over the country and world, i got to go to england a few years ago and teach at one of their colleges, which is a non credit kind of thing like night school in america. It was great fun sharing ideas and techniques, i learned as much as they did.

i would say the best way to learn to draw or paint, is to get your materials and start doing something. 'cause when you say art, it doesn't matter if you know how to draw or paint.. don't let instructions stain you.. first action, then talk.
