Melchizedek or Malki-tzédek (מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק / מַלְכִּי־צָדֶק "My king is righteous", Standard Hebrew Malki-ẓédeq / Malki-ẓádeq, Tiberian Hebrew Malkî-ṣéḏeq / Malkî-ṣāḏeq), sometimes written Malchizedek, Melchisedec, Melchisedech, Melchisedek or Melkisedek, is a character in the Old Testament who appeared in Genesis to the patriarch Abraham. He is called "king of Salem" (believed to be ancient Jerusalem) and "priest of the most high God" in Genesis 14:18.

He was a high priest from God. The significance here is that neither Melchizedek and Jesus had an earthly linage and for that reason the Bible describes Christ as an high priest after the order of Melchizedek. I personally believe that the appearance of Melchizedek was a picture of the Christ that was to come much later in time. Hope this helps!

Heb 7:1 For this Melchisedech was king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him:
Heb 7:2 To whom also Abraham divided the tithes of all: who first indeed by interpretation is king of justice: and then also king of Salem, that is, king of peace:
Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but likened unto the Son of God, continueth a priest for ever.
Heb 7:4 Now consider how great this man is, to whom also Abraham the patriarch gave tithes out of the principal things.
Heb 7:5 And indeed they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is to say, of their brethren: though they themselves also came out of the loins of Abraham.
Heb 7:6 But he, whose pedigree is not numbered among them, received tithes of Abraham and blessed him that had the promises.

Gen 14:17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter of Chodorlahomor, and of the kings that were with him in the vale of Save, which is the king's vale.
Gen 14:18 But Melchisedech, the king of Salem, bringing forth bread and wine, for he was the priest of the most high God,
Gen 14:19 Blessed him, and said: Blessed be Abram by the most high God, who created heaven and earth.
Gen 14:20 And blessed be the most high God, by whose protection, the enemies are in thy hands. And he gave him the tithes of all.

he was a local king whom Abraham met in genesis 14.
I'm not sure why he is considered so important in christian theology though.

there is much conjecture but the wise take what is said in the Bible, cross reference it (if it needs to be cross referenced) and take it for what it is... don't put words into the Bible that are not there...

dangerous...
