Why does my dog turn around his bed a couple times before laying down?
In the wild, wolves do not have the comfort of a doting owner willing to make or share a soft bed for them. Instead, they have to soften the ground or whatever they prefer to sleep on by twisting and turning it with their feet. This turns up the earth and kicks up leaves and branches making the resting place a lot more comfortable. So despite the gorgeous bed your dog may have, instinct kicks in first and they feel the urge to turn around a few times.

Sorry - there's an OLD joke that goes: "Why does a dog turn around before he lays down? Because he can't turn around AFTER he lays down!" (My grandma told me that one)
ANYWAY...
The dog scratching its' bed is kind of like your fluffing your pillow at night. "Making" his bed before he settles in for the night.

It's for staking out his territory in a ritualistic sort of way. It's a sign to insubordinates to stay out of this zone. Humans do it too, like when you're setting up at the beach, or for a picnic.:-)

Well he/she scratches it because he/she is making it more comfy for him/her, like fluffing pillows. He turns around a few times so that he can get his scent around it.-Im not sure about this one though.

Just making it comfy, plus they like to lay curled up, so they do a couple of twirls to get positioned! It's cute!

your dog is prepping his bed to suit his standards. just like humans like to prep their beds w/a certain thread level in terms of sheets, pillow firmness/softness, etc.
i enjoy watching my dog do that. i find it very cute!
