This may sound funny but if you don't know who to talk to ask a chaplain if you can get to one. My father is a colonel chaplain and they REALLY know the proper channels to go through to get things done and handled. That's part of their job really.. they're there to help and support you in any way they can and they're often a lot nicer. They should be able to tell you the best way to go about handling it or at least who to talk to that can tell you. They are all (or should be!) willing to help the soldiers in any way that they can.

If you get them, go to sick call. There's no shame in it. Better to get it taken care of early than end up on crutches because you're being hardcore. No one is hardcore on crutches.

It is actually pretty hard to get "chaptered" out of the military for an injury. For something like shin splints, it's really unlikely. Don't worry. Take the running advice in the other post and you won't have much to worry about at all. I'm a wimpy runner and I had the same worries going to Army basic, but it turned out ok. I payed attention to form and I made it through on time. You'll be ok too.

A little more about running. The right shoes are important while you're training. Go to a good running shoe store- one that edges towards marathoners and athletes more than fashion- and have someone look at how you walk and run. Get GOOD SHOES. I say again. GOOD SHOES. Not the $15.99 junk at whereever. Expect to spend about $80. Then expect them to make you get shoes again in BCT. You have no choice in that, but they'll pick the best of what they have for you.

Now, running. Your arms should go front to back, not side to side or in circles, and have roughly a 90 degree angle at the elbow. Your hands shouldn't come above nipple level on the swing forward. Keep your back straight and don't tilt your head at an unnatural angle. Keep it level with the pavement. Otherwise you make it hard to breathe. Keep your abs loose to prevent side cramps. Don't clench your hands. Let them flop a little. Allow your jaw to hang free. Assure that your foot hits the ground lightly, You don't have to stomp or shuffle. Shuffling will wear you (and your shoes) out. Try to run without hearing your feet. Breathe with the pulse of the run. Steady tempo is important. You'll be running to chanting cadence. Working out the pattern of arm to leg to lung now will help a ton later.

Look, I served four years in the US Air Force, and let me tell you....you have to learn the proper form of running before you get to basic. When folks got shin splints in my squadron, they obviously went to sick call. However, here's a little problem with the other answers.... if you fall behind the rest of the troops in your training, you will get what is called "washed back." The reason that you will be "washed back" is because you are unable to continue training if you cannot run, or are put on a waiver to be excused from all exercises and training. I knew girls that got shin splints in my squad and they were not allowe to march either. Therefore, until they were better, they could not complete training and again, were "washed back" or given light duty. And trust me, after eight long weeks (and 13 for the Marines), you are ready to get up out of there and graduate. So, here's what you do. Starting now, you need to be running. In the beginning do not try and go for distance, focus on technique. Make sure when your foot hits the ground that you land on your heel and push up onto your toe. Google "proper running form" or something like that to get some better ideas. If at all possible, (if it's not too late), join a running club and most of the experienced runners will be more than glad to help you with your form. Once you have your form down, focus on endurance. Since the bulk of your physical fitness in basic training will be outside, spend all of your time now doing calisthenics. Skip the weight training, and do push ups, pull ups, sit ups, deep knee bends, jumping jacks, and any other calisthenic activity that I forgot to mention. Okay, I think I have you covered on physical fitness. Now, here's how to keep your M-16 steady when you pull the trigger.....exhale at the same time, and it gives you more stability and will help you hit your target. And trust me, if you earn your marksman ribbon while at Basic, you are "the man." Now, here's what to pack. I cannot tell if your a man or woman, so I'll help with both. Pack as light as possible. When you go to your AIT training, you will later be allowed to wear your civillian clothes, and just have your family mail them to you, or before you head off to your first official assignment at an operational post.
Toiletries:
Toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, can of shaving cream, deodorant (solid not liquid), soap should be bottle soap. Do not pack mouthwash!!! Sometimes, soldiers get desperate and have attempted to drink it to get drunk. Crazy, but true.
7 pair of brand new underwear. Please purchase basic white underwear. If your a female, do not pack thongs. When they do the initial shakedown and throw your stuff all over the place and remove items considered contraband, they will rip you for having thongs. Bras, plain white. 7 pair of plain cotton socks.
Now, the military will issue you black socks, but wear your white underneath, because the black socks are wool and very itchy.
Do not pack, any gum, candy, cigarettes, because they are contraband and will be taken.
If you smoke, you will not be allowed to once you get to basic training, so try and quit now.
Do not pack a bathrobe. All you are given is a bed, and a footlocker and space in the locker is small and mostly will need to hold your military gear. Maybe pack a small notebook and basic ballpoint pen to write letters with. You will be given a break to go to the PX (Post Exchange) to purchase any items you may need.

It depends on what level of training you are at. If you are almost done just stick it out otherwise they are you going to pull you out of training and then once your leg heals. This is basically going to set you back a week or two in training.

go to sick call, they will give you some motrin. go back, they will put you on profile. get a long enough profile, you get recycled. suddenly your 8 week basic training is now 12-14 weeks. you get to meet a whole new platoon of people, new Drill SGT's. etc. etc.

You really need to read "Stop Shin Splints" by Gary Buchenic (also available in electronic format here: http://www.shinsplintscure.org ). It's about how to permanently cure your shin splints naturally. Worked for me and for thousands of people. Good luck!

Same thing if you get shinsplints any time while in service-- go to sick hall. The should have you on a no-run profile to give you time to heal up.

you better know the ranger creed before you get to rip it will save you alot of push ups and just be in top shape they will teach you everything else

my sister got them in high school so bad she was in a cast...don't mess around with them...make them put you on sick call...they are tiny fractures in your bone that will only get worse...
