Dogs are NEVER too old to learn. I've seen it time and again. You need to find a good training class and really listen. MOST of the time it's the owner that needs to be trained and not the dog. He's probably nippy cause he doesn't see any of you as "pack leader" and he nips to "put you in your place".

Fill a plastic water bottle with rocks or pennies and keep it handy. next time he nips shake the bottle to startle him and say a firm NO. Have him sit and praise his good behavior.

He'll catch on.

my kids were a pain in the butt when they got older...I wanted to give them away, but the police told me that if I didn't keep them I would be in legal trouble. So, I did ---- until they were 18. whew

Well, sounds like you do have to do something and it isn't just your fault...mom is saying you need to do something. How old is your dog and what kind is it?
Call a dog rescue, they are some that specialize in certain breeds, some take all types. But don't get another dog yet. Take your time, research the breed and be committed, prepared to train from the beginning and deal with their care. Breeds that don't shed usually have alot of hair and have alot of grooming to be done.

Good luck.

You need to take him to obedience school. Even if he is old, it will help and you owe it to him since obviously no one trained him properly in the first place.

He's too hyper because you don't give him enough attention and exercise.

He sheds because he's a DOG, that's just life.

I am sure he's perfectly smart, you just haven't given him the attention and training to help him.

That is very very sad..... when your dog passes on I sincerely hope you don't get another dog, because obviously your family does not take the time or effort to train and socialize them.
