Household chemicals generally won't get rid of urine stains and smells. Buy yourself an enzyme cleaner made specifically for this task, such as Nature's Miracle. These are widely available at pet stores.
If you can't tell exactly where the stains are (you can smell them but not see them) either act like a dog and get down and smell everything yourself, or get a portable black light, under which urine stains will appear if the room is dark. (These are available at pet stores.) You can also bring a cat into the room - he or she will go straight toward the stains to sniff them.
Thoroughly soak the stains with the enzyme cleaner, allowing it to sit for the recommended amount of time. You can rinse and even soap and rinse when it's done. Repeat the applications if necessary - sometimes several times. Be patient. It takes awhile for the enzyme soak to work.
Tips
Remember that animals like to revisit places where they've peed. I recommend spraying Listerine over the place to discourage the animal from returning and peeing again (they don't like the smell). White Vinegar also works for this task.
Warnings
Try the enzyme treatment on a small, not-visible surface first to make sure it won't harm the finish on the surface you want to treat.

I have used a product called "Consume" with much success. It's fairly easy to use and usually handles it on the first application.
It is manufactured by Spartan Chemicals, works great. It contains suspended organisms which become "alive" when you put it on the area, and digest the waste products. Not at all expensive either.
Gordon Food Service used to carry it, probably still do. Make sure you read the directions and dilute it down to the recommended application (clothes, carpet, etc. -- have different recommended dilutions). If you don't get the dilution right the first time, then strengthen it a bit on the second application. After you work with it a bit, you'll definitely be able to get it done in one shot -- one application.
In most cases, it also handles stains as well as smell, just an excellent product. It will even handle feces, but you may need to put the solution into a carpet/upholstery shampooer and go over a second time to get the job fully done; it just depends on the material.
As a side note, if cats are urinating on your couch or other areas other than using the cat pan, then one of two things are happening: either they are unhappy with the cat pan (isn't clean enough or accessible or something like this), or they are upset with how you treat them, this could even be the type of food you are giving them, or that you aren't letting them out to do their mating rituals. Sad, but true. Get them fixed or get them a mate, or both. Cats are independent creatures, they like their freedom. They don't like to be tormented by children, or abused by adults. They will find revenge.

When you are dealing with cat urine or any urine for that matter. The 3 major parts of urine is urea- which the sticky tacky part, the urochrome- which is the pigment or color part and the uric acid cyrstals and salts. Alot of products will work on the 1st two parts listed above which removes the stain and odor, the odor part is not gone the cyrstals just dry and become dormat, Isn't interesting that when it rains, or gets humid the ordor comes back or the carpet gets wet from steam cleaning or more urine from a pet the odor comes back, it always comes back.... It takes an very special product to get rid of urine competely, look at the following site www.urine-off.com this company makes bacteria and enzymes to eat Fats, Oils, Grease, strach, and Sugar. They spent alot of time feeding very specfic bacteria all the components of urine until they had a product that eat it all the way to Black Light Clean- that means that all the residue of the urine is gone.. Give them a try they truly have something very good. Good Luck with the Cat Pee

Someone already said "Nature's Wonder", but there is something for cats specifically that is made by the same people. It's called "Nature's Miracle, Just for Cats". It's amazing... Spray bottle soak the cushion, wash the covers in it in the wash (Best Results use cold water, believe it or not :) ) and then steam clean the CRAP out of it... Asuming that this is not a recurring problem, you should be able to knock it out in one SERIOUS Hit, and be done with it. Good luck. :)

I have been using Odoban with great sucess. I run a foster home for orphaned kittens and had to throw away quite a few matresses before discovering Odoban. I buy it at the nearest Sams Club. It also works wonders for smelly teenage boys in the house!

Get Nature's Miracle - hands down the best!
==================================
OF THE 17,OOO CHEMICALS THAT APPEAR IN COMMON HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS,
ONLY 30% HAVE BEEN ADEQUATELY TESTED FOR THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON OUR HEALTH
I personally wouldn't use Odoban around animals, but I'm fussy about what my cat is exposed to. Judge for yourself. Also, there is ample opportunity to mix in the wrong proportions and get it too strong.
I used to use it to clean my bathrooms and floors and stopped using it bc it's so strong and I couldn't stand the chemicals any longer.
Read this:
ODOBAN danger
Teri (Guest Post) | 09/16/2005
We show cats. Several years ago, we found Odo-ban at Sam's Club. It seemed like a great cleaning product, as it kills viruses, bacteria and other pathogens that might be a danger to our cats.
Unfortunately, in our experience, we have found that Odo-ban is a bigger danger to our cats than viruses or bacteria might ever be. Following our use of the product by the labeled instructions, Odo-ban destroyed the reproductive health of our cats, causing uterine and testicular atrophy, c-sections, and kitten death. In researching the product's contents, we have found it contains ingredients that are related to compounds known to cause reproductive damage in humans.
We have now talked to other people with cats that have had problems with this product. It requires long term exposure, and young animals whose reproductive organs are developing are at greatest risk. Vet hospitals seem to use it safely - but there is generally no long term exposure to the product by animals in vet hospitals.
Using the product caused us problems, not using the product has solved them. We feel it necessary to say to other pet owners, Odo-ban may be a problem for you and your animals.
