I just saw The Passions of Christ again. Why was his death so horrible? Why did God allow his son's death to be so painful? This is a seriuos question for me. I am trying to understand.
To atheists and agnostics, this is NOT your question. I will ignore(as I have the CHOICE to do) any UNNECESSARY remarks. This question is for ME, not for YOU. Thank you for being considerate)

The short answer?

1) Because God has an intense hatred for sin. Jesus was paying the penalty for the entire world. This shows how personal God takes it when we do evil, and how much it hurts him.

2) The show how intensely God loves us. He was willing to put his son through all that just to save you and me.

Why did Jesus suffer and die the way he did? That is a very important question. It was because he supported his Father’s side in the issue of universal sovereignty, or rulership, that was raised in the Garden of Eden w/ Adam, Eve, Satan and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Bad. He proved God to be true and Satan a liar. And he did that by letting his earthly life be controlled by God, even though it resulted in a martyr’s death.—2 Corinthians 5:14, 15.

That death was an expression of God’s love through Christ. (1 John 4:10) As a result of it, benefits were made available to all mankind. (Romans 5:8; 6:23) But how many are willing to accept those benefits? How many are willing to imitate Christ and sacrifice their own desires in submission to God’s will?—Hebrews 13:15, 17.

OK, first of all... I believe in Jesus as a glorious prophet (no sarcasm) You should not dismiss an Agnostic's point of view because they do not always dismiss your points.

Jesus died a terrible death because humans are extremely cruel and aggressive by nature. They fear what they do not understand. Jesus was a healer. Witches were burned alive because some also had healing powers. I have not seen the movie because I will not support Mel Gibson collecting loot from the pain and suffering of a prophet. I have personally banned the movie.

I've thought about this a lot myself. I was once a Catholic, so I am not oblivious to the teachings of the bible. Just because I do not agree with all of it, doesn't make me some kind of idiot who has no right to post an opinion.

It was a Hollywood flick, intended to collect money from those who believe in the goodness of Jesus.

I used to ask these same questions regarding family members who passed away. Such as... Why did my grandfather, who was a wonderful man, have to suffer for years with cancer? Why do mothers kill their own babies? There is no ONE answer.

For the record, I mean to disrespect.

I don't know if it was necessary for Jesus to die such a painful death. The reason he died like that is because that was the method used during the time he lived to execute criminals.
The whipping too, was an official kind of punishment!
God did not invent the cross, men did.
What the suffering does though, is help us to understand how much God loves us!!
He was not only willing to let his son die as payment for our sins, he was willing to let him die and excruciatingly painful death so we could live!

He was the final sacrifice.

His blood had to be shed because He was the only Man on Earth with pure, clean, sinless blood

You know how before people sacrificed lambs? He is known as the Lamb of God, because He was inoccent and clean.

He had to die a horrible death to save us, because basically it has to be sure His blood was shed, and He made the complete sacrifice

Well, in retrospect i guess its because He carries the burden of sin from EVERYONE that ever lived after that. millions of billions of trillions of quadrillions of people, all their sins, rolled onto His shoulder. The Passion of the Christ is not even close to illustrate the Sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross

so i guess it's because of the burden Jesus was carrying. imagine all those sins into one man? That is why Jesus was the only one who could pay that price, because His blood is "worth extra"

John 3:16-For God so loved the world that he gave His Only Beloved Son, for whoever believed in Him shall not perish but have Everlasting Life

Jesus was crucified. that's how the Romans executed people found guilty of crimes against the state. Yes, it was barbaric, but they were barbaric times, and the Romans were a very barbaric people, despite the good things they did. He wasn't the only person to die that way, but I don't see you bemoaning the deaths of the other people, many of them as innocent as he was. Do you write your congressman in protest when women are stoned to death in Iran, or Africa? Do you protest the slaughter of innocent children by terrorists and starvation in the Sudan? I doubt it. You should be more offended by current events than ones from the past. That is what God would want from you.

It was all out of pure love. Jesus showed us how much He is willing to suffer on our behalf. In order for a covenant to be made between God and man blood must be shed. Just like in the Old Testament, they sacrificed animals for the forgiveness of sins. In the New Testament God sacrificed His own Son. This proved to be the ultimate sacrifice ever. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

Christ died for our sins so that we could be saved. We should all go to hell but Christ took the blame so we dont have to. If God just took Jesus to heaven in His sleep or something nobody would believe He saved us. It is still hard for me to picture my Savior suffering a horrible death like that. I thank Him everyday. It shows me how much He loves us.

I also wondered that before but now I can answer your question. Because God wants to show u His unfailing and immeasurable love. And that we should hate sin as we don't like to go through it ourselves (the death thing). Our pastor told us that it is actually worst than the movie. It is really horrible. And that we should thank Him (and be grateful for that) for saving us because we are the ones who should be dying that way not Him! Hope I helped you and God bless you

You ever watched anyone die from cancer or any other terminal illness that causes prolonged suffering?

The "death" Jesus suffered was meaningless.

It was meaningless because he could block all pain (since he was a magician) and he did not die.

But, the bible is a book of mythology, so it really doesn't matter.
