My first language is Japanese.

Please check following sentence:

Did your dog eat food in the yard? Yes, it did.

Can I say, Yes, IT did. ?? I think: ( it ) implies a whole sentence or an event. so we cant use (it ) for A dog.

Yes, he did. or Yes, she did. is correct.
And when you dont know whether The dog is male or female, which do you use: he or she or something else.

What do you think?

Thank you in advance

'Yes it did' is perfectly acceptable, animals are often referred to as it if the gender is unknown.

The questioner has asked the owner of the dog the question, so the answer would be given by someone who knew the gender of the dog. Yes he/she did. would be the answer.

your sentance above is correct but strange. first, dogs usually don't eat their food in the yard. you should say "backyard'

Yes it is acceptable to say it. Everything does not have to be given a gender in English.

If you want to be grammatically correct in proper English not American, I would not use the word "yard" or "backyard". I would say garden.

That's correct. You can use it for either male or female dog--it is a pronoun if used appropriately. You can also specify he or she if you know the dog's gender.

You did well!

Yes you can say 'it' did.

'It' stands for the dog, as 'he' would stand for a male person, or 'she' for a female.

You could also answer 'he did ' or 'she did', depending on the sex of the dog, but 'it did' (for an animal) is fine.
