Because they have that choice. If for some reason people could only live together by marrying, more people would marry. Marriage is still encouraged though through certain tax benefits, but discouraged by the dramas that divorce bring with them.

My husband and I lived together for about a year before we got married. We chose to do this for several reasons. Neither of us really think that the piece of paper means that much, we were just as committed to each other before we got married. We actually got married so I would be covered by his medical insurance. We also wanted to be sure we could live together, some people just can't sort out the small things and end up divorced. We still don't wear wedding bands, because we don't really need to show the world we love each other or need a symbol of it, we know it that is what matters to us the most. Some people will say to us, well how do people know your married, well if someone asks we tell them, everyone close to us already knows.

it doesnt have anything to do with not taking responsibility. its to do with commitment. when you get married, you devote the rest of your life to the person your married to. some people are skeptical how they will cope through it. people choose to live together over getting married mainly because it's a way of bringing them closer together but with always the option that if it doesnt work out, they can move on. also, some people think that marriage is a big step in a relationship and some people just arent ready to get settled down into marriage. others dont think marriage is a big thing because a couple doesnt need to be getting into marriage for their to be love in the relationship.

Number one: I think it's because it's acceptable.
Number two: Women don't care that much about their virginity.
If a guy had to marry before he could have sex, he would be willing to make a commitment and so would the girl.

Not ready to commit or don't believe in tradition. Maybe they prefer to show each other commitment by being together without the "shackles" of marriage.

THAT A GOOD QUESTION, I BELEIVE THAT THE VALUES AND
MORAL OF MARRIAGE DOES NOT MEAN THE SAME NOW AS
IT DID YEARS AGO. THE YOUNGER GEN BELIEVE LIVING
TOGETHER IS FINE, IS EASY COMFTABLBLE,.IT JUST DOES
NOT MEAN THE SAME THINGS, AS THE OLDER GEN. IT WAS
ABOUT STRONG COMMITMENT. IT JUST DOES NOT MEAN
THE SAME SORRY TO SAY. I FROM THE OLD SCHOOL,
