An ICU is an intensive care unit department or unit of a medical centre or hospital where people in critical state are treated. The people treated there are mostly in highly unstable condition like those that are struggling to survive after a car accident or after a serious impact of disease like heart attack etc. It is the unit where special care and active inspection is always on the roll so that the treatment may not get delayed .

ICU stands for intensive care unit. People in the intensive care unit get sent there because they are in critical condition and need to be taken care of extra carfully. A lot of people get transfered up there from the ER depending on how bad they are. To go to the intensive care unit you must be in pretty bad shape if they send you there. Usually people who have been in very accidents can be transfered there. They have an intensive care unit for babies and new borns too. This is called the NICU. This stands for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
