Police often sit in the car with a radar gun. It is not a 24-7 situation unless you are in DC where they have automatic ticketing and the radar is always on. Most states require some kind of proof of who is driving. But the communists may get thier way yet...

While radar is widely used, a sign that says "speed checked by radar" is there as a deterrent and doesn't necessarily mean that speeds are being checked by radar at that very moment.
The idea is to make people slow down by making them aware of the possibility of getting a speeding ticket.

"Speed Checked by Radar" normally warns of an officer in a car or motorcycle, with a radar "gun".
Remember that you can not be arrested or investigated without reasonable cause OR warning. If you are being paced by an officer (where they drive the speed limit near you, and can tell if you are going faster), it is assumed that you are "warned" that you may be being watched.
But with radar, to be 'more legal', you have to warn the drivers by sign.

All it means is there might be a cop with a radar gun checking your speed up ahead. Sometimes they use planes and helicopters with radar guns on them and radio to the police cars on the ground.
You didn't really think that they had invisible radar did you?
It amazes me how some people think. or try to.

Sometimes cops are on the ground using radar guns.
Some cops use meters in the road.
Others use airplanes/helicopters and measure how fast you're going from one point to another.

Look up..They do it by aircraft..an air plane will mark your speed from one point to another, and if you get there to soon, you are speeding and they contact ground units with a description of your car..or they are on the ground and set up speed traps. The cop that targets your speed calls ahead to other units..does this help?

This means that it is an area heavily monitored by police patrols using radar guns. That's it.

It just means that there are police radars in use. Whether it be by police cars, motorcycles or helicopters.
