when you and your kids survive another challengeing day, also kids are not born with instructions books " Parenting for dummies" it really sounds good but no , so just go with the flow, soon this parenting thing will fall into place, it does get easier as time goes by maybe parenting will throw you some curve balls now and again, all you have to do is learn how to catck them, good luck ,,,

All of the previous answers are terrific so I'll just add this. When your kids tell you that you're the best Mom or Dad in the world (and you didn't buy or give them anything). That really makes me feel good since I'm their stepmom.

Wait until the kids are 18. If by that point they're competant and self-sufficient, you've done your job as a parent.

when your kids are comfortable telling you anything. because your kids can be mad at you all the time and you can be jus a mediocre parent. but when your a good parent they'll come to your and be like "mom i got a problem". thats when you smile and say "GOSH, im gettin good at this"

When your son calls you from Irac and say's " Don't worry, we know our job, we'll do it, do it well and then come home, sure miss you guy's, love ya'll, and tell Mom to send socks and cookies...lotsa cookies..huuaaa!" and you know they are doing something they are proud to do. We can never shine as bright as our grown children.
