I think most people are comfortable with what they grew up and are familiar with. It is the unknown that terrifies people. Questioning the authority of parents, society and religion can cause those groups to ostracize people who do not believe as they do.
New discoveries about many things occurred because people were curious, courageous and challenged preconceived notions of how people should behave, the nature of the world, and what the nature of a supreme being might be.

Astral, one time i asked devout Christians why aren't the dinosaurs in the Bible and what about the big bang theory and evolution and they changed the subject altogether and attacked the fact that I'm questioning it. There are so many religions out there with all basically the same teachings. I believe that Heaven and Hell are within and the teachings of the Bible are all lessons to aid you on your path. The same with most religions (righteous) from Muslim to Buddhism to Hindu. Be right in your practices because you know what's right and wrong for you and let your inner guide take you along the way. Everyone has it and really and truly - at the end of the day that's the true God within.

Because it's a sin, haha, no really, the reason is because every question boils down to core beliefs and those are where people look to answer a question. The bible is all some people have as proof, half the time when they say the bible says something, it doesn't. All religions are certainly not the same, but the major ones are pretty much the same.

All religions are not the same when you break it down. There is only one God and one religion. (Eph 4:5,6)There is only one way God wants his people. That is why he gave us the Bible to show what he requries of us. This may sound like he's controlling our lives but he did give us free will. The Bible is a GUide to life. (2 Tim 3:16)Truly, everything in the Bible, if read correctly, is good for us and does not deprive us from anything truly good. When u say openminded, so u mean believe in everything?
people believe in one thing because thats what they put their faith in. If a person who professes they have true faith and then still leaves room for doubt than that person is a hypocrite. People who constatly remain openminded do not reach what they desire, if not that. If they desire to find the true religion, and will not settle with the one that makes sense to them than what has that person accomplish? I believe that every person should test each religion out and see if it truly makes sense to them and is in LINE with what the Bible really teaches. (1 John 4:1-3)Granted, everyone has their own interpretation, BUT they have to remember is it their thinking or God's thinking. If a person does not believe they shoulg think like God than they do not trust him. The way we think like God is to live in what he says in his Word, not actually become like him, thats impossible.
IF ur thinking im answeing u with a colorful"because the bible says so", i am answering truly from my min on what makes sense and i believe the bible makes sense and there is even evidence that it is divinely inspired.
Do u believe the Bible is from God?

Whether you can funnel all religions into the same thing [which isn't true] isn't the point.
The goal of Xtians is to spread their religion....The bible tells them to do it, so answering your question w/ something biblical is a way of doing this.
Besides, doing this reaffirms their own beliefs.
It's disrespectful, in my view.
I always think that ppl on a public forum ppl ought to be careful when trying to give religious answers to questions that don't ask for one. Same goes for those that wanna denounce a religious way of going about things.
For example; I remember answering a question about how this girl had a controlling mother that used Xtianity as an excuse to keep her under severe lock and key. I told her to get her and her mother to talk to their local minister to help work things out....While others told her to forget Xtianity and forget her mother. In this case, using religion as an answer was appropriate, but usually...It's not.
It's considered a social no-no, in any really public place, to use God or the bible as an answer. But hey, ppl can do what they want. You still have the power to filter.
But sometimes the bible can say interesting things that arn't based in being religious, so. It's not all bad. It's just the majority of Xtians use the quote that are based in some idea that's religious.

unfortuantely, many ppl are this way. please clarify a specific question and i would be more than happy to answer u. however, at times we dont have answers to certain things, and at times our only answer is the fact that the old testament says so. but it really is a case by case thing. but it is hard to answer this question w/o u being just a little more specific. thanx
no all religions are not the same. judaism believes in one G-d, and there is no one else. christianity believes in the trinity, which of course is rejected by judaism and islam. islam also believes in one G-d, just a different one from the Jews. the Jews believe that the new testament is a load of rubbish, and all the different contradictions from different editions dont help the new testaments case. especially considering the fact that in the old testament, there have never been more than 3 contradictions, none of which are substantial, as they neither change the meaning of a verse or the content. islam of course is hard to believe cause id be suspicous of one guy getting a prophecy and a new religion starts, especially when G-d gave the five books of moses in front of the entire jewish ppl.
so to answer u no, religion are not hte same. if one believes that others are right then he obviously doesnt follow his religion closely. hope i helped!

Not all religions are the same. Some religions worship dead people, some worship trees, some worship satan, and others worship the 1 true God of Creation. There is ONLY 1 God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. (Matthew 22:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.)
"Because the Bible says so" is not what I would consider to be a valid answer to any question. An explanation of WHAT the Bible says and WHY it says it should always be given.

There are many similarities but that doesn't make them the same. When people say, "the bible said so" it's just because they are usually young kids and dont really have any other reply. These ones that are immature in their faith have still had a genuine encounter with God and God's spirit has substantiated their faith. They may not be skilled in Christian apologetics but they know the truth, the understanding and knowledge will come with time;, it's called sanctification.

I've always thought the same thing. If one religion is true, then why are there so many adherants to other religions that are just as devoted? Some people should take a step back and look at the whole world.

This is a really interesting question. I think you are right when you say that people aren't open to discussing different beliefs and interpretations of scripture. I've thought about this and a couple of reasons seem to exist.
One reason is that people seem to "need" to believe that they have faith in the one absolute truth about the Universe and the Creator. Maybe it makes them feel more assured about being "saved" or living a good life, but any suggestion that they are not perfectly correct seems to make them feel very threatened.
Another reason may be that so many religious communities--churches, faiths, or whatever--dictate that a person must believe just what the authorities tell them to, or they are not a "good" member. That makes questioning any part of it very risky--the person wants to be "good" after all, not someone who will hurt the faith community.
Sometimes people follow their family's religious beliefs and questioning any part of it seems to make them disloyal to that family and disrespectful of their parents or grandparents.
And one more reason seems to be something that many religions count as a sin--some people are just too proud to consider that maybe they are not perfectly right. They are so very sure of themselves. Of course, if anything really makes them question their faith, they have a lot to lose, namely their smug belief in their superiority.
As I said at the beginning of this answer, your question is an excellent one. Thank you for asking it; I've enjoyed thinking about it.
