No technology is inherently good or bad. It all depends on what it is used for. From a technology perspective, baby monitors are essentially the same as bugs used to spy on people. CCTV is used to monitor cargo movement on board ships, and to monitor traffic flow on motorways. It's also used to combat shoplifting and to combat anti-social behaviour in public spaces. When used in public spaces it has the potential disadvantage that the user can potentially use it just to be nosey or spy on people - the degree to which you judge that the benefits in combatting anti-social behaviour outweigh this potential disadvantage depend on how much you are worried about anti-social behaviour versus loss of privacy.
Personally I view public spaces as public, not private, therefore I do not expect any degree of privacy in them. There could equally well be a real policeman standing around rather than a camera - they would be perfectly entitled to be there - it would just cost more.

In towns on buses in shops yes they are good, but I put a camera on eaves of my house for the reason that a car that I had got gouged with a nail or some sharp instrument a waste of money putting it up as a community warden tells me it should not view anywhere other than inside my garden boundary as another person answered if you have nothing to hide or worry about what the h. So then my car is now not, protected he said my answer to my problem is to knock down my wall and have off road parking my car then would be smack bang in front of my sitting room window which I have a nice of the country trees, and the cost was out of question the Law!mmmmmmm.the warden????

As a means of deterring and detecting crime they are undoubtedly good. But as with any good thing you can get too much of it. I think we now have CCTV cameras in places that they are not needed and that then becomes an invasion of privacy - big brother is watching us.

If you mean Closed Circuit TV in security areas like air ports, large departmental stores are good to enhance security from terrorists. It ishould be properly monitored. Its use depends on use of concealed cameras, visible camera can be avoided.Misuses of CCTV is that in many ready made showrooms, beauty parlours, hotels etc they are misutilised to by recording take nude pictures/films/porno without your knowledge and even they can be used for black mailing.

cctv is a good idea..if it is used correctly.
if people havnt done anything wrong then it shouldnt bother them, only those who have done something wrong seem to have a problem with it!!
we use cctv on the buses and have used it to proscecute offenders that have assaulted either staff or passengers and also used it to trace missing peoples movements and locations.

On the whole, good. I used to think that it was an invasion of privacy but it's now been around for so long and doesn't appear to have been misused. Its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.

Good...and bad!
Research and crime figures show that it reduces crime in placed like town and city centres.....BUT.....it drives the criminals (shoplifters etc) into quiet towns...thus causing in increase in their crime figures. Heroin addicts that shop lift to feed their habits now travel further...and steal more..as peeps in these quiet town as usually asleep on their feet!!
