Try melatonin, it's a natural hormone, wihtin a few days it'll have you on a normal sleep schedule, you can find it at most drug stores, just take it about an hour before bed and, you'll wake up feeling great!

I went to a sleep seminar and in a nut shell hear is one way. You have to stay up until 2 AM and get up at 6 AM. No TV or computers--they suggested cards or reading but not in bed. After 3-4 nights of this then got to bed 15-30 min earlier each night until you get to a normal bedtime. Also what was mentioned is that it's okay to wake up in the night as long as you got right back to sleep. And if you are lying awake for more than 20 min get up and read or something. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. eat a light snack before bed and maybe a glass of milk. If you are lying awake worrying about problems or things that you don't want to forget then keep a pad of paper and pen by the bed and write those items done so that your brain doesn't have to try to remember and you can rest better. Oh there is also white noise like a fan running or try ear plugs

Well I have had this trouble till I stumbled upon something by accident. I have actually found that if you have a couple of drink or enough to just make you a little sleepy before the whole buzz thing kicks in and you actually crash right then and there you will get a great nights sleep dont recommend doing it if you have work the next day but beleive it or not it actually helps put your body back on schedule for a bit its not a permenate fix but a couple of drinks every now and then wont hurt.

I like you have the same problems with sleeping and most sleeping pills dont work or the ones that do put me in a coma which completely defeats the purpose of tring to get a good nights sleep.

exercise early in the day... have a ritual before you go to bed.. ie.. sit in the living room and watch your favorite show on TV or read a few pages... when you go to bed.. do not take any meds.... and get up at the same time every day.... regardless of when you finally got to sleep... and stay up until the next night... when you do the same ritual as you are falling asleep.. think of all the good thoughts you can.. rainbows.. butterflies... sitting on a porch swing with firefly's all around... anything you like... for the first week.. you will be very tired... but then you will start sleeping through the night... and it will get better.. make you bed time quite.. no TV.. no lights.. unless it is a soft glow... do not use candle's... it may take a few.. especially if you have a long history of taking meds to sleep.. but it is the only way to get off that stuff and really get a good nights sleep.. trust me.. I know... :)

Not being able to sleep is usually a sign of a bigger problem. Depression has been linked to insomnia. Typically speaking, I'd take a look at other areas of your life. Are you eating properly? Working out? Staying hydrated? Are you overly stressed? Balance out those areas and the sleep should slip right in.

Otherwise, do as I do and take 2 shots of rum and crawl into bed and throw on an episode of Friends.

Valerian Root is a good natural way to try. They sell caps of it at most pharmacies. I've used it, it works.
But it doesn't work like I'd like it to. I only suggest it because it works great for a lot of people. For me, the problem lies deeper.
My doctor put me on a few different sleeping meds before he decided to try a different route. Now I take effexor in the morning and if I need it, plain otc benadryl at night.
Good luck, insomnia sucks.

I have had trouble sleeping since I was 11. One of the best tips I use is to not try to keep sleeping if you are in bed and cant sleep. It is suggested that you get up and do something until you feel like trying it again. Then give it a new try.

I cant seem to get my mind to shut off some nights.

I have used meds to sleep but they become habit forming and it is easy to get addicted to the good ones. Then when you decide to stop using them because you don't like being reliant on something it takes a while to get back to where you can get back to sleep without medication.

I came off meds before and went 14 days without one wink of sleep. It was hellish. Try to stay away from anything like xanax or valium. they are called benzos. or benzodiazapines - there are lots of different kinds check w your doctor and try to stay away from them.

Good luck.

If you're really having that much trouble sleeping, ask your doctor about sleep disturbances like sleep apnea or hypopnea. They might prescribe a sleep study where you can find out what's really going on when your body tries to sleep. There are remedies that really work if this is the problem.

Sounds like classic insomnia to me. I'v had problems with this i the past- one thing I find that helps is to get more exercise during the day. When I started hiking a few miles each day, I had a much easier time sleeping.

try this tip:
get a pair of pantyhose (or something similar, you'll see). Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front of you. bend your knees so your fleet are flat on the floor, making your feet about a shoulder length apart. put your knees together and wrap the hose a few times around the tops of them, in a circle. Then lie down the rest of the way with your arms at your sides and your head on the floor. concentrate on breathing through your nose, making sure your breath goes into your abdomen, not your chest. (breathing in your chest can make you stressed or light-headed).

this may sound weird but it works! I think it's Pilate's or yoga but i forget.
