"Do you remember the occasion when Jesus returned to
that upper room after his alleged crucifixion 'and saith unto them, his (disciples), Peace be unto you' (Luke 24:36) and his disciples were terrified on recognising him?" I asked so many christians Why should they (the disiples)be terrified?" When one recognises one's long-lost friend or one's beloved, the natural reaction is to feel overjoyed, elated and one wants to embrace and kiss the hands and feet of the beloved. Why did they get terrified?" They always reply that. They (the disciples) thought that they were seeing a ghost." I ask, "Did Jesus look like a ghost?" they all say, "No." "Then why did they think that they were seeing a ghost when he did not look like a ghost?"

Nizzle, the fear of God is not like the fear from a lion or a shark or the fear from a dictature. It doesn't push you away or makes you run. The fear of God brings joy to the heart and move you closer to God.

First of all, they didn't see him killed, they learned about it. Second, we suppose that you see or learn your friend is died then the next morning you see him walking down the street. Do you get scared?

Come on, God gave you the brain to think. Use your mind. Don't let your soul and your mind enslaved by our christian philosophers who they seem to me that they are in a deep conspiracy.

Because they thought he was dead and he was not!!!!!
the disciples of Jesus were not EYE-witnessess or
EAR-witnesses to the actual happenings of the previous three days, as vouched for by St.Mark who says that at the most critical juncture in the life of Jesus, "they all forsook him and fled." (Mark 14:50). All the knowledge of the disciples regarding their Master was from hearsay. They had heard that their master was HANGED ON THE CROSS; they had heard that he had GIVEN UP THE GHOST; they had heard that he was DEAD AND BURIED FOR THREE DAYS. If one is confronted by a person with such a reputation then the conclusion is inescapable; they must be seeing A GHOST. Little wonder these ten brave men were petrified."To disabuse their minds from the fear that gripped them, Jesus rea-soned with them. He said, 'Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself:' To put it in colloquial English, this is how he told them: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU FELLOWS, CAN'T YOU SEE THAT I AM THE SAME PERSON who walked and talked with you, broke bread with you - flesh and blood
in all respects.
Why do doubts enter your minds? 'Handle me and see,for a spirit has
no flesh and bones as you see me have.' (Luke 24:39). In other words he
is telling them: If I have FLESH and BONES, then I am not a GHOST, not a
SPOOK and not a SPIRIT!" Jesus is telling them, as recorded in this verse, in Basic English, that what the disciples were asked to HANDLE AND SEE' was not a translated body, not a metamorphosed body and not a resurrec-
ted body, because a RESURRECTED body is a SPIRITUALISED body. He is
telling them in the clearest language humanly possible that he is NOT
what they were thinking. They were thinking that he was a SPIRIT, a RE-
SURRECTED body, one having been brought back from the dead. He is most
emphatic that HE IS NOT!"

1. Why you think that only Christians read bible ! Why you are so mean !!
2. You are a confused person and love to confuse others.
3. You can not think beyond one small community in the world.
4. You are wasting your time on a fact which has occurred 2000 years back, knowing that the outcome will not help anyone in any way.
5. And obviously his disciples were normal human and not a great man like Jesus. So they thought him as ghost. Natural instinct - and we are suppose to get terrified thinking of ghost - we do not think its a good ghost or bad ghost.
Sorry for all the direct attacks.

Sailor, there is something you forgot.
First, you have to decide on the premise of whether or not the Bible is true. No, I take that back, you forgot to SAY.
You have your answer before you asked-to you an unanswerable question.
What are you thinking?:if you cant trip up the Christians they are brainwashed? My Bible is like a boy scout handbook? And perhaps you have in some way foiled the logic in an answer? Well here goes Sailor, the ol' mantra:the Bible is the inspired word of God. It does not contradict itself. And Christian living is faith-based, including living by the Word of God. Every word in the Bible is important-else it wouldnt be there-and for the true mystery of the Word to be revealed (and sometimes the same passage having different meanings at different times)is with the leading of the Holy Spirit. So tho you've irked me, I take liberty to say, I am glad that you are seeking. And great that you have used Bible references. You know the Gospel. Now,1 person closer to the return of Christ, Amen!

**See added note***
At this point the disciples were not fully understanding of who Jesus really was. They expected certain things and at this point they were discouraged- they had just WITNESSED him being tortured , mutilated beyond recognition and crucified, also at this point they were not yet filled with the Holy spirit and understanding. To them Jesus was dead- they were not expecting Him to return.
The disciples were human - just like you and me- if you or I had just seen what happened to Jesus, happen to a close friend of ours, then a few days later, they just appeared in your room and started talking to you- you would be freaked out and taken aback too! You have to look at everything in context and see what the situation was at the time. It was not until after they were filled with the Holy Spirit, that they remembered and were able to understand - read John chapter 2- after he was risen from the dead did they begin to understand the things that Jesus had spoken to them before.
Added note- two things - they did see his body, they wrapped it up and put it in the tomb- all the disciples knew where the stone and the grave was located, as for the crucifixtion some were watching from afar- at no point does it say they did not see him, they just did not go near except for John. Also- it is quite clear from the encounter with Thomas that the holes in his hands, feet and side were clearly visible- that would freak me out!
What they did not see, but they heard about was his ressurrection!

The Bible says they were "startled", because they were discussing Him and I presume He appeared out of thin air, or at least suddenly.
Having a dead friend show up wouldn't necessarily comfort me, either! I'd feel scared. I believe touching a dead body was a ritual impurity for Jews, and calling up the dead was forbidden also.
Also consider, what kind of friends were the apostles in the end? Only one apostle is mentioned at the cross, none of them could stay awake in the Garden, and Peter even denied him 3 times rather than stick up for him!
Jesus asks them "...why do questions arise in your hearts?" Not only would I be scared He was a ghost or a dead body or what, I'd wonder if He was pissed at me for abandoning Him in his darkest hour.
They act confused on many occassions right up until receiving the Holy Spirit. They were living something Unique, to say the least.

Because they saw Jesus crucified on the cross, bought to the tomb in a cave. To the disciples, Jesus has died. But they were not aware that Jesus is truly the Son of God and only He has the power to resurrect from death. Thus they were shocked and terrified to see a dead man, alive before their eyes again.

Even though Jesus told him he would raise from the dead, none of them really believed it until they saw him. People raising from the dead doesn't happen every day, after all. Put yourself in their shoes. You WATCHED someone die a slow, horrible death. You saw his body hanging there on the cross, you saw the spear pierce him and the blood and the water flowing out of him. You may have even helped bury him, and you definitely had gone to his tomb and seen the huge stone that was in front of it. If you saw someone die like that, and then a few days later they suddenly appeared in a locked room with you, what would you do? I'd be freaked. After I had a chance to calm down and think about it, I'd be overjoyed and elated, but any sane person's initial reaction would be terror.

Jesus didn't look like a ghost. Verse 37 say's they thought they saw a spirit.
He appeared to them from within the dimension he walked. Notice that it say's in verse 35, that He just stood in the midst of them?,,in other words, He just appeared.
Every time a Angel appeared to men and Mary, they were all afraid. The flesh body has a hard time accepting the Spiritual Realm.

hello my dear friend,
The disciples of Jesus were not have same mentality what Jesus had. If they had that they did not stay with fear in the room and got frighten on him. They were so fearful because of Jews. That time Jesus appeared suddenly they got fear, but they got courageous and spirit after Jesus has gone by clouds to heaven.
the bible says even peter also did not realize his work and faith in Jesus, he went to see to pick fishes,
so Jesus was not appeared like an ghost. They were frightened so they would feel frightened whatever they saw at that time.most of the disciples sacrificed their lives with courage on Jesus after He sent to the Holy Spirit to them.

they had just heard of his death, only one of his disciples was with him at the cross (John) .. the others hid for fear that the ones who killed him were going to come after them too. they were scared to begin with. in Biblical times, it was more than just a sin to worship anyone outside of God. though this was God's son they were worshiping ( yet others didn't believe it) it would be like over throwing the government today, and they could have been put to death for being blasphemous.
when Jesus walked into the room, they thought it was a trick of some kind. and maybe began to wonder if they had been set up.
of course, I can only guess this would be the reason for their fear.
it's easier to scare someone who is already scared.

They were not yet endowed with power from on high..which gives them the boldness needed when walking this walk....as in Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus...it was after they received the Holy Ghost that they could even discern..which is a gift of the Holy Ghost...
