Puppies need their first shots at 8 weeks, again at 12 weeks and the last ones at 16 weeks. They will get a rabies shot then and be put on a heart worm medicine as well as a flea control medicine.
The only time a puppy needs shots at 6 weeks is if it is going to leave it's mother too soon, or if it never nursed off mama. They get mama's antibodies (disease immunity) until they are weaned.
Most vets have "puppy plans" that will include all you need for a healthy puppy, usually at a discounted price.
Don't take the puppy out of your yard until it has all the vaccines I mentioned. You don't want to take any chances.

The length and timing of the window of susceptibility is different in every litter, and even between individuals in a litter. A study of a cross section of different puppies showed that the age at which they were able to respond to a vaccine and develop protection (become immunized) covered a wide period of time. At six weeks of age, 25% of the puppies could be immunized. At 9 weeks of age, 40% of the puppies were able to respond to the vaccine. The number increased to 60% by 16 weeks of age, and by 18 weeks, 95% of the puppies could be immunized.
