Birth-12 months: 6 children
13-24 months: 6
25-30 months: 8
31-35 months: 10
3 year olds: 14
4 year olds: 16
5 year olds: 16
6-8 years old: 20
9-12 years old: 24
These are the current ratios of staff to children from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC):
Infants: 1 staff: 3 children
12-28 months: 1:3 with 6 children in group, 1:4 with 8
21-36 months: 1:4
2 1/2 years: 1:7
4 & 5 years: 1:8

Depends on the state. In kentucky, it's:
Infants: 1/5
One's: 1/6
Two's: 1/10
Three's: 1/12
Four's: 1/14
The ratio is always set by the youngest child in the group...even if there is just one infant...and the rest are older, your ratio would still be 1/5
These ratios are INSANE...no one gets paid enough for that kind of stress. And it is really bad for the children. And if you think about half of the nation's young children are in these settings for 10+ hours a day...it's really scary!

For 3 year olds it's 15 with a lead teacher and teacher assistant
For 4 year olds it's 20 with a lead teacher and teacher assistant
If it's only one teacher then I think it's 10 children.

A pre-k teacher can be in a classroom alone with 12 children. After 12 they are required by state law to have an assistant.
