When you call a girl "Mariposita" it is a tearm of endearment (little butterfly). However when you call a guy "mariposita" you are referring to them as "gay, homo, etc."

In some South American countries "Mariposa" is a slang term for homosexual...most like the english "flamer."

In other countries, it's just a term of endearment, especially if they're adding the "ita," you may just want to ask whoever said this if you can to clarify which they meant.
