Hi, I study Japanese! Is there some program where I can draw a kanji on the computer (with the mouse) and it will recognize the symbol? I actually remember having a mini-app like that and it was awesome! I really need something like that because how else am I to QUICKLY figure out what the kanji is?? I know I can use radical searches/dictionaries but that takes too long.

I'm on a Mac by the way.

Thank you!!!

I meant if I see the kanji in a book or something, so I cannot copy and paste in into an online dictionary. And no furigana. Then what?

Sorry, I don't know of such a thing.
: (

If I did, I would want it! (I'm on a Mac too...)

Frankly, if I were you, I'd PANIC!!!

Or I'd trawl through this lot looking for the radical...

Actually, you could scan it in - or draw it and save it as a jpg or gif perhaps - and put it on a site like photobucket so we can look at it...!!?! Someone would probably recognise it - I would get my Japanese husband to check if I didn't recognise it and no-one else could help...!

If it's in a book, you're screwed into having to spend time searching for it. That's just how it is. We have to look up words in dictionaries when we don't know it, so do the Japanese.

If such a program exists, no one knows of it. You're just going to have to deal and learn the kanji or pray it comes up on the computer so you can search for it using a program like JWPce.

the mac and windows has in the Preferences a place to add a language that u can access from your own keyboard. you type in the katakana using romaji (abc..) and then hit the space bar to select the correct kanji. if you don't know the word in jap to begin with your had better use a standard English to Japanese dictionary and then compare what's written to what choices the computer gives u. BTW, ask me anything about learning jap, i'm a pro

I know you said you didn't want a dictionary, but usually just copy and paste into an online dictionary. It's actually really fast.

This is the online dictonary I use:

You can even copy phrases (kanji combinations) into the search.

I'm also on a Mac.

If you are lucky, the kanji might have some little kana above it; so try to remember your katakana and hiragana, but beyond that, good luck ;)
I know how you feel; I'm also trying to study Japanese.
