Yes, in the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition, vegetarian food cooked with love and devotion, then offered to God, becomes "prasadam" which means "the lords mercy", the food becomes spiritualised, we then take the remnants and in practical terms, you can experience the potency and make spiritual advancement.

One of the basic corporal works of mercy in the Catholic church is to "feed the hungry". The corporal wotrks of mercy are as follows:
Feed the hungry
Give drink to the thirsty
Clothe the naked
Shelter the homeless
Visit the sick
Visit the imprisoned
Bury the dead
There are also spiritual works of mercy:
instruct the ignorant
counsel the doubtful
admonish sinners
bear wrongs patiently
forgive offences willingly
comfort the afflicted
pray for the living and the dead
Works of mercy can bring you closer to God, in that you offer charity to His people who are suffering. How can you teach suffering people about a loving and caring God if their basic human needs are not met? Those things have to come first.

This is an excellent observation.
Eating together is one way we become closer to one another, and a sacred meal is a way of connecting with God.
It has been said that if you are eating it is hard to hold a weapon, so eating together is also symbolic of peace.
I've added some websites below that explore this question more deeply.
