I got an all over color job today of demi-permanent dark brown (almost black, it seems), and my hair dresser said it should fade naturally with time, hence the reason she made it a shade darker than I wanted it. what is demi-permanent... and does it fade faster than other dyes or what?

Permanent absorbs into the hair shaft. Demi (or Semi) permanent color coats the hair shaft. It gradually washes out each time you shampoo. You won't have roots. Demi permanent color also makes your hair very shiny.

Demi permanents are less harsh to the hair because they don't contain amonia like permanent dyes do. Demis aren't fully absorbed into the hair shaft so they fade faster, but by the time the color is really faded it'll be time for a touch up anyways.

I only use demis on my hair to help prevent damage from dying my hair, they don't dry the hair out as much

Demi color will just sit on the hair's surface while the permanent color actually penitrates the hair and will stay in the hair untill it fully grows out or falls out.

you sound like me exactly. It usually starts to fade in about 4-6 weeks. The nice thing is that you don't get the nasty roots like you do w/permanant color, but if you are covering something up like gray or an old bleach job you have to keep going back.

I think demi-permanent means it's not permanent, so it's actually semi-permanent
