That's about the age where you have to start letting him. I know it's really hard - be right outside the door, and ignore the guys' looks as they walk by you. Have several good talks with your son before doing this, and tell him to ask you questions of you or your husband after - if he has any.

yes as long as he knows where it is my son is 7 1/2 and he uses the bathroom by himself when we go shopping or to the movies or at a restaraunt anywhere! But for some reason my son is more mature than most 7 1/2 yr olds (He knows that if he doesn't eat all of his supper there are no sweets and things like that and he will tell whoever is trying to give it to him that he can't have it b/c he didn't eat his supper)

Yes at 7 years old I would let them use it and wait outside the door for him. My daughter is 8 and when she's with my husband he waits outside the door for her. They are a little too old to be in the bathroom of the opposite sex honestly, what if some lady is undressing or something? That's what the bathroom is for, and sometimes the stalls are a bit too small for that. I wouldn't expect my 8 y/o to walk past a bunch of grown men using the urinals...

No, I don't allow my 7yo son to use the men's restroom alone...it simply isn't safe anymore. But he doesn't like to use the ladies either.
The best alternative I have found is to allow him to use the disabled person's restroom. That way I know he is safe, because he is the only one in there, and he feels independent too. It works well for us.

I have an 8 year old. It first depends on your sons level of maturity. Would he know what to do incase of an emergency. Now if its not busy I would say no, but if it was not busy then I would say yes... again depending on maturity!

yes, I would - I would be at the door though and I would make sure he has the hang of basic toilet conduct by going with his dad/uncle/grandpa a few times, and quite honestly would also try and explain inappropriate behaviour just in case some grown ups there misbehave.

Depends on how crowded, and only with me standing outside the door. (My son is 8.) He hates going to the ladies' room, but if it's really crowded, and Dad's not with us, sometimes I make him go with me anyway.

Yes, I think at 7 they should be able to go in if you wait at the door for him

I'm so overprotective, I wouldn't . I think I must get it from my mom though because she took my brother's in with her until they were about 12 or 13 lol!

Depends where you are - but I almost always have my boys use the Ladies.
