Well, I haven't had problems with my self-esteem in a very long time. But when I did, I appreciated compliments. It made me feel like I was just imagining myself worse than I was. Just make sure to be realistic when you make the compliment, or he might think you're mocking him. You just don't know how much influence you could have on this guy's self-esteem. A little subtle encouragement from could virtually cure this guy of his problem for the rest of his life.
The only danger I see is that he might start liking you when you're only being friendly to him. By all means, be gentle but honest in your communication if you don't like him back. And if you happen to like him back, that will be great for both of you because you'll make each other feel good about yourselves. But even if you don't, you should try to remain friends with him to point him in the right direction and maybe introduce him to people.
The problem with having low self-esteem is that you tend to look at everything in the world with much contempt. And no one wants to hang around with anyone who's a drag. So the guy ends up feeling alone, which drives him further into depression. He needs to learn to be happy with himself and others, and to stop looking down on himself, if he is to recover from his problem. You can help him do these things, and you might be the only one willing to do it. Good luck!

Actually, Id like to know the answr to that, Im sure it would have a slight variation of how a girl would feel because we are... after all... different.

you get quite nervous, like you don't know how to react. although many compliments tend to boost the confidence
