Because some people are so arrogant that they want to force their beliefs on others, (like Iraq reinstating Sharia law, which is evidently such a great thing that it is worth Americans dying for).
Some people like it though because it mandates morals without any real justification, just that "God said so." If you hate strip clubs, casinos, and general heathenism then maybe you'd like it. It solidifies a unity for people who think along these lines and throws the free-thinkers to the wayside.
Personally, I think people being as free in taking viewpoints as possible and living life as they see fit (within legal bounds) is more important than government mandated ethics. You can believe in whatever you want, just don't force it on others.
