A small community in our county is actively lobbying a casino developer to build here. They claim this will provide a lot of jobs, tax revenue and solve all of our problems. If your community has recently allowed casino gambling do you think it was good for your community or not?

We do not have high unemployment. We don't have very good roads where they want to build this thing and we have a relatively low crime rate. What kind of effect would a large casino have on our community in your opinion?

Casinos suck the money out of locals. I agree. The only really good jobs they provide are the initial construction jobs while they are being built. MOST casino workers don't make a lot of money, and less than the average skilled employee. The Casino industry promised Atlantic City the world. Atlantic City is still the armpit of the world - just get one block away from the boardwalk and you'll see what I mean.

We've had a growing casino population here in the Phoenix area of Arizona. So far I've only seen good from it. The industry has employed hundreds, if not thousands. Most jobs there pay a decent wage also. The areas around the casinos have gone from small farm towns to city suburbs. (That may not be a good thing!) Most of my friends go every now and then, but play responsibly. I'm sure there are some with gambling problems, but I'm sure if they're not gambling at the casino, they are gambling online or betting on sports.

No-casino promoters promise lots of well-heeled tourists playing baccarat, but what they make their money from is locals pouring their mortgage money into fruit machines. If people only lost what they could afford in casinos then the casinos wouldn't be profitable. The profit margins come from the compulsive gamblers.
