hi, about 11 months ago my neice fell on her bottom while rollerskating.. and ever since then she's been complaining of lower back pain.. it comes and goes.. and its not severe.. she can do everyday things. it just hurts most if she stands up staight or laughs or coughs. and i wanted to kno if this could be a bulging disc or herniated disc.

she also recently had a xray.. but it showed nothing so she's going to get an mri soon. but if it was a bulging disc or herniated disc wouldn't it show at least something on the xray? or do xrays not show herniated or bulging discs? if it is neither bulging or herniated disc.. what could it be?

According to this website, xray is the least exacting of four tests that are used to spot a herniated disc. The x-ray is very good at showing fractures or deposits on the bone, but doesn't appear to reveal what we are looking for except to possibly a very sophisticated eye:

You are probably aware that our nerves emanate from the spinal chord though openings in the vertebrae. One of the possible effects of a herniated disc are nerves being compressed as the openings between the vertebra are reduced. This can have health consequences to the organs and tissue fed by the nerves in that area.

It sounds like you are treating this with the urgency that it deserves. I urge you to investigate therapy techniques that involve stretching to remedy the problem, and avoid surgery unless absolutely necessary:

Good luck and God bless you!

Maybe not a herniated disc, more like vertebral subluxation, meaning when she fell, she probably fell crooked, or twisted, and the vertebra shifted (twisted). This puts stress on the nerves running through it, around it, that's why she hurts when she stands, or laughs, or coughs, because the upper torso is heavy and the spine is having to support the body. When you cough, you add more strain. All this strain will compress, or irritate those nerves. What she can do is lay down on herside. She should know which side is more comfortable for her, and which one is more uncomfortable. The side that is more uncomfortable is probably the side she needs to sleep on. Keeping her knees together, and her body in alignment, she will eventually untwist that vertebra back into place when she stretches, hopefully....if that's what it is. Why don't you try seeing a chiropractor. I know most people think they are quacks but they are NOT anything of the sort. They've had adequate training and they know what they are doing when it comes to the spine and nerves. Well, go to one that's been around for a while that has lots of experience. It's alot cheaper than going to a hospital too and the massages, TENS, and roller beds are great.

I had three laminectomies,(ruptured disc fix surgical procedure) two in 1980 and one million in 1982. Had three exceptional ruptured disc, every repaired with the surgical procedure which means they opened me up, scraped away the disc fabric that had pop out and closed me again up. I presently have a bulging disc that bothers at times if I over do. The soreness earlier than surgical procedure was once horrid and the surgical procedures have been high-quality however I do not know in the event that they dot hat any further, in the end, that was once decades in the past. Never had the backbone fusion factor, the proposal of that scares me. I do not desire something fused! I do have everlasting nerve harm from the ruptured disc. I can't lay flat with out severe soreness and can't sleep besides in a health facility mattress so I can alter the function to fit me. No one needs to repair the bulging disc as I have tons of scar tissue from the opposite surgical procedures so I cope. Good good fortune.
