TB is caused by a bacterial microorganism called Mycobacterium tuberculae. It is related to Mycobacterium leprae which causes leprosy. It tends to wall itself off in the lung and eventually lead to pneumonia that is difficult to treat. It used to be called consumption. The number of cases is increasing. Treatment is with an antibiotic that you must take for months - sometimes for a year.

bacteria spread from person to person, but usually only to those with comromised immune systems due to age or drug use, AIDs etc. If you are healthy you probably won't get TB. If you are not, you are at high risk.
