There are many stages, and your friend cold go through all or a select few. Depending on what forms of treatment they go under, they could lose their hair, become nauseated, lose weight, and almost get a gray color to them. Sometimes they suffer radiation burns which can be very painful. Eventually they can get bloated and retain quite a bit of fluid, causing their stomach to stick out abnormally. They are usually in a lot of pain. Due to pain meds and various medication, it can become difficult for them to communicate rationally. In the end stages, they become very lifeless, and have no energy to even get out of bed, requiring around the clock nursing. They may even develop a smell that can be very difficult to be around. Some patients pass before the worst of all that I have described. It is almost as if they know what is to come and they give up before losing any dignity. There are points where mentally they go through stages of denial, anger, blame, often giving up, and then acceptance.
I am truly sorry to hear about your friend, and I hope that considering the situation, that all goes as best as possible. Please know that my thoughts are with you and your friend.

What type of cancer your friend is suffering from may make a difference in how long they will live, if they will have pain, and other problems.
Be prepared to be strong for your friend, to be by their side, and make sure they know you are not afraid that they are ill (even though you really may be scared).
It will most likely be one of the hardest things you will ever have to endure.
There are a lot of things that may happen, but what I think you should do is go to a support web site for the type of cancer and see what others are saying and how they are handling the problem, or talk to your own doctor. I think you need to know the most likely scenario.
Best wishes and good luck.

Different cancers do different things to people. Be nice and be patient and be friendly or loving depending on your relationship. Just understand that the death will stop any chances to say or do nice things.
