Put it in a ziplock bag...the ones with the "quick zipper" things. squeeze all the air out and zip it tight. Mine lasts 3 to 4 days longer this way. I do keep it in my fridge too :)
Hope it helps.

First, NEVER EVER EVER buy the "bags-ready-to-use" when it comes to lettuce and other greens. Consider the times you have "uncovered" moldy / off-color / just-plain-wrong selections of greens at your local grocery store. You have the option of rooting out the best selection or avoiding that green altogether, right? The problem (and wierd thing) with a sealed bag of greens is that you have absolutely no way of knowing what the condition of every leaf is inside. It takes just one decomposing leaf in the middle of the bag to contaminate the entire contents.

I buy it as a whole head, and wrap the head in a couple layers of paper towels, and then put it inside a plastic bag. The plastic bag keeps it humid, so it stays crisp, and the paper towels keep it from directly contacting the plastic, which would tend to cause it to rot where it touches the lettuce leaves.
If it's precut for salad, it spoils a lot faster.

It depends on the type we buy and how we handle.
While buying a lettuce, u have to buy a light weight one.
Means less water content.
Dont use knife to cut, if you just want to use a portion of it.
Use hands to remove the layers and store the remaining stuff in a box with cold water. Literally, the lettuce should be immersed in water in the box and refrigerated.
In this way, you can preserve it for a minimum of 1 week.

Pour a little bit of lemon juice on it ,and when you buy a head of lettuce break it up with your hands not a knife! Also never leave it in the store bag,use a ziplock bag!

I have leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, bok choi, rocket, silverbeet) in the garden and pick as I go. They seriously are no hassle to grow, and if you grow rocket with them it decreases the liklihood of attack from snails.
PS, there are varieties available all year round.

Um, put it in the fridge.
Those bag things really suck. You have to use them the day you buy them or they'll spoil awfully fast, even in the fridge.
