I heard a Rabbi being interviewed today about this very thing and thought what he said was right on the money.
Mr. Gibson apologized, and that's a good first step. Chances are that what he said when he was drunk is something he believes to be true at a certain level. Therefore, there is some rehabilitating of sorts he can do to keep moving in the right direction.
The bottom line is that I will continue to watch his movies, I will forgive him, and I would encourage him to keep working through these anti-semitic thoughts on a personal level.

I think what he did is really irresponsible. I also think making the Passion of the Christ was provocative and irresponsible as well. Way to divide a bunch of people, who without the production of this movie, would have just been fine and getting along.
I think anyone who drives drunk is a moron, I've drank many times, and I've NEVER been behind the wheel drunk. And I've been the DD many times as well, it's not so hard to do. Why his friends let him ultimately drive is beyond me, I heard there was an argument about it. For someone that age to be so irresponsible is really pathetic.
Oh, and what he said too, it really personally offends me, but people can say whatever they want to in this country. Similarly, I can choose to boycott his movies and anything which would give him money. So, I'll exert that right which I have.

I think he is anti-Semitic and it just slipped off his tongue because he was caught off guard.
He has so much money that you have to wonder where he gets "his benefits" and whether he too has become super rich through involvement in the Art & Craft of Freemasonry that a lot of Jews seem to prosper and get carried away by. You really have to wonder how anyone can get that rich honestly.
I watched 'The Passion of the Christ' and I did not really like it. It was too gory. It had too many close up shots, making it difficult to watch and for the eyes to follow. Furthermore, it had too many surrealist side effects in some of the characters, making them too creepy to seem totally real. I am not sure how anti-Semitic the movie was, as some of the issues about who killed Christ are old ones, and some people appear to think that even celebrating Easter is anti-Semitic.

I'll always be a fan of his earlier work. But currently, I have to say I'm a bit worried about him. I think he's lost a few if not all his marbles.
He needs to get help, find out what is really bothering him. One day he may realize its not the Jewish community that's out to get him. His real enemy is himself (and by the sound sounds of it "King Alcohol". Maybe Mel just needs a mtg
The 1st step is realizing you have a problem

I like Mel Gibson, but like too many Hollywood/Music/Celebrity types, he thinks his opinion counts more than it does.
This might be a watershed moment where these jerks realize that they are just jerks, like the rest of us.
Maybe Bono will shut his trap and just make music.
Maybe Robbins will shut his trap and make movies.
Maybe the Dixie Chicks will shut their traps and make... Wait. What do they do again?

He deserves as much of a chance as Robert Downey Jr, Betty Ford, Kitty Dukakis, Winona Ryder, Keith Richards or Kate Moss have been given...

Let he without sin throw the first stone....I could care less about what kind of dirt or ( stones ) the media tries to throw at anyone. We like to put people way up there on a pedistal, where it's a lot more interesting watching them splat when they get knocked off. It's just not something I put much energy into seeing or hearing.

I never considered the man holy or perfect by any means. But now? It's obvious he's a Jew hating racist. He blames remarks he made about Jews during his arrest was due to his drunken stupor - now after he sobers up and sees money about to drain from his pocket for his anti-Semite remarks - says he does not really feel that way about Jews.
His drinking just loosened his inhibitions about saying what's on his mind and in his heart. He blames Jews for all the troubles in the world - pure and simple.
So now - his credibility with me is dead. I am not a Jew, but still his racist views are not my cup of tea.
