I do not care if they are a "cult". By definition ALL religions are cults. But there are some people, especially those of a particular Christian influence, that are afraid of certain cults and tend to talk a lot about them. Why? I don't know. That's their obsession.
I have known a few JWs and they seem like very nice people. I would actually like to learn more about their beliefs one day. Some of them may come off a little strong and they seem to place a lot of emphasis on what God's true name is, but not all of them are like this.
Don't worry about who's a cult and who's not. Just love everyone the same. If their beliefs are different than yours, so what? Do you really think God will send many of his most devout children to hell because they were labeled by some people as members of a cult? This is what anti-cult people preach, but I don't believe it.

Yes, JW is definitely a cult. I've been a member of many internet groups for people recovering from cults, and I've encountered hundreds of people who are former JWs who say it's a cult and that being involved with JW caused them all kinds of problems (just like being involved with any cult!)
Stay away from them!
There are lots of nice people in the world, you don't have to join a cult to find nice people. Also, the key word is "seem" as in what you said, "they seem nice." I'm sure they do not realize they are in a cult and are very well meaning, but they are also in a lot of pain because cults cause lots of inner pain for the members.
Read some webpages that are critical of JW. There are lots of them, many (probably most) were made by former members. Just search google for "JW cult" and I'm sure you'll find tons.

The Jehovah Witnesses began in the 19th century by Charles Taze Russell.
As far as Christianity goes, it was started by Jesus Christ in the 1st century.
A religious group that follows a particular theological system. In the context of Christianity, and in particular, CARM, it is a group that uses the Bible but distorts the doctrines that affect salvation sufficiently to cause salvation to be unattainable. A few examples of cults are Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Science, Christadelphians, Unity, Religious Science, The Way International, and the Moonies.
Some of their beliefs are:
The "invisible presence" of Jesus Christ began in the year 1874.
The year 1874 marks the end of 6000 years of man's existence on earth.
In 1878 (three and one half years after 1874) Jesus began to reign over his kingdom.
It's a cult.

Request they use a brand new Oxford or NAB bible to talk to you. These bibles are well translated and won't be more than similar to theirs. Does that make them a cult?

I think they are a cult because they coerce their members to do certain things under penalty of shunning.
